It’s that time of the week again! Well, I know I’m a tad early, but got appointments on Friday and so I wanted to make sure I got FF’s in this week!

Also wanted to thank our hostess Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for  manning the wheel again this week. Also wanted to thank her for her birthday wishes! Thank you kind lady! (It’s my birthday today, but shhhhh!) 🙂

If you want to join FF or read other great stories just click on Rochelle’s name and off you go to a wonderland of words!

THE CHALLENGE:

Write a one hundred word story that has a beginning, middle and an end. (No one will be ostracized for going a few words over the count.)

“See her Charles?”

“Yes, I see her.”

“She’s beautiful! Just think we saw her like our great grandparents did!”

“Not exactly sis.”

“Well okay, not exactly, as we aren’t immigrants. Thanks to them.”

“They didn’t stay here long before they moved to Milwaukee.”

“What did they use to call Milwaukee, back then?”

Charles smiled, “the German Athens.”

“Our great-grandparents were part of Milwaukee’s great beer industry.”

“Yes, they helped in establishing  PabstSchlitzMiller, and Blatz.”

“I’m quite proud of our ancestors Charles, even if I don’t drink beer.”

Charles laughed, “I know sis, I hate the taste of beer too.”

  1. I have that dislike of beer in common with your characters Jackie. I enjoyed this very much. Using a historical context is an excellent idea. Well done.

  2. Nice story! I’ve never tasted an American beer I could drink either. Now, give me a REAL German beer, and I can make quick work of it. I’ll post a picture. Even that, at my age is harder to do since I seem to harder to do. Happy, Happy Birthday. Hope yours is as good as mine was.

    1. My Grandma preferred a German beer also. I just never had a taste for it myself. Thanks for the birthday wishes. So far so good. Even have someone else doing the cooking. 🙂

      1. Now that’s my idea of a birthday. Beer is an acquired taste. I got it in a baby bottle and have enjoyed on occasion since just like coffee. it always tastes better with company. We had coffee everyday at 4 pm too.

  4. Dear Jackie,

I had to get over here to comment while it’s still your birthday. Hope it’s been a great day. Loved your story. It seems a few of us went the immigrant route. I can only imagine what my grandparents felt as they saw the Statue of Liberty for the first time.

And as friend once told me, “When you’re out of beer tough Schlitz.

    Shalom,

  5. Dear Jackie,

Happy Birthday! I loved the slice of history you wove into your story and the humorous aside that the children of those immigrants ended up not having a taste for beer. Good job.

    Aloha,

  6. This must have been the story of your ancestors because it felt true. Funny how none of you like the taste of beer! Just an excellent story. You definitely made every word count, Jackie!

    1. Tom PPPPP, well I really hope you won’t hold it against me that I don’t like beer. I’ve tried, really, but nope, no go. Thanks for the b’day wishes! The beer they made back then was pretty popular, back then. 😉

      1. Of course I wouldn’t hold it against you. You are one of my favorites!!! Beer taste was a lot different back then. Today’s beer drinkers like a strong tasting beer, full of flavors and layers.

        Much love,
        Tom

  8. I guess you didn’t get drunk on beer for your birthday! I didn’t either, though I can’t say I wouldn’t have liked to. Beer takes some getting used to and maybe you and your characters just haven’t given it a fair trial. Anyway, nice dialogue and a warmhearted touch about the heirs of some of the folks Lady Liberty has welcomed. And nobody’s throwing up!

    1. My characters had no sea sickness, just not the taste of beer. I knew it would be controversial, but hey I like pushing the envelope. Ha-ha! 🙂
