Genre/Horror (101 words)

Wendi  was driving down a beautiful country road when a thick fog appeared from nowhere and forced her to stop.

Now she was standing in a field facing 3 doors and a voice was telling her to pick a door to walk through. What the hell was going on?

“Wendi, choose a door now.  Be careful  for your future lies within.”

The unearthly voice was booming in her head. She felt compelled to choose. Which one though?

This is a nightmare! It has to be, Wendi thought. Soon I’ll wake up.

She opened the door of her favorite color, red, and felt the heat of hell.

  1. the heat from hell. yeah, i have felt that too. well done.

this line – This is a nightmare! It has to be, Wendi thought. Soon she’ll wake up. shouldn’t it be “Soon I’ll wake up.” because it was her thought. right?

  2. Good one Jackie, that red door is dangerous, you have to wary of the colour red. In life it means to stop! Not go. So the door to hell is red eh, I’ll try to avoid it. Enjoyed your post.

    1. Unfortunately she chose her favorite color without thinking too clear. Yeah, red is usually danger. Thanks for reading!

      1. And that is another brilliant comment on the whole metaphorical nature of this prompt, the challenge of choice based on favourite colours when one colour is seen as representing danger.

  3. Dear Jackie,

I have to wonder what would happen if someone chose the red door and it led to a happy place. I mean, what about Christmas or Valentine’s Day? Just a thought. Evocative story, nonetheless.

    shalom,

    1. That flashed through my mind I must confess briefly, then I wrote what I did. Too predictable perhaps. Ugh, I will try harder next time. Thanks as always Rochelle. 🙂

  4. Yes, I was kind of hoping for a surprise ending – like she was sleep walking again and opened the door to find herself staring into her own oven at the roast beef she forgot to put away after dinner.

  5. Oh, white would have been heaven perhaps? Is red likened to fire and white to peace here or is it based on Wendy’s past wrong-doings:) nice story and well told

    1. I think in this case red is likened to fire and Wendi should have known better. Ah well, maybe she will get a second chance. Thanks for reading! 🙂
