What is your most vivid memory of the kitchen in your childhood?

The most vivid memories of my childhood kitchen is that it didn’t have any counters! It had a walk in pantry, as it had been built in the late 1890’s when they had pantries. So if you wanted to do anything you had to do it on the kitchen table. Everything from the dishes to food items were stored in the pantry. The sink was a big old-fashioned porcelain one, with just enough room to wash the dishes and drain them on the attached drain board that was also porcelain, it was one big sink. I remember having to stand on a stool to wash the dishes. We started young with chores at our house.

As a child, who was your favorite relative?

Oh, this one is easy.  It was and still is my Aunt Nene. She was my dad’s youngest sister. I think I wrote about her once before, but I’m too lazy to find the post. LOL She had bright red hair, blue eyes and a mouth worse than any sailor. I love her to pieces. She didn’t take guff from anyone, but she also had a soft heart for a lonely little girl. I’m not sure if she’s still alive as I sadly lost contact with her years ago. I’ve tried to find her, but with no luck. She’d be about 80 or 82 now I think.

What did you or did not like about the first apartment you ever rented?

I enjoyed the freedom of having my first apartment. I shared it with a girlfriend. The thing I hated about the first apartment that I rented is that I had really strange neighbors. Especially one man who lived next door.  He always made a point of being outside when we got home from work to say hi, no matter the weather. Snow, rain, shine, he was there.

What kind of TV commercial would you like to make? Describe it.

As I don’t watch TV, I’m not sure. How about if I could get rid of commercials? Now that is one thing I could live with! A commercial about getting rid of  commercials LOL

“Ladies and gentlemen! Don’t you wish you could do away with those pesky commercials? The ones that make your children whine for days for those expensive toys that break in one day? Or wouldn’t it be nice that the sound level on your TV stays the same at all times? Without those damn commercials coming on at least 10 notches higher? Now you can! With my super, duper, spray on, you can wipe those commercials right off your screen!’

  1. We had an old and cramped kitchen, later dad knocked out some walls and made it much more useful. Plus we had a fuel stove where on Sunday nights we could make toast. Great post Jackie.

    1. thank you Michael. We had a regular stove. But it was such an old kitchen. I would love to have one now like it, but back then I hated it. lol

  2. Congrats on your NaNo achievement 😉

I certainly love your TV commercial (I’m not a big TV watcher, but when I do watch it I can’t stay awake because there are SO many commercials).

  3. Very interesting post Jackie! I’m fascinated by the kitchen you describe…but it must have been a bit difficult to prepare food there, doesn’t sound too functional. I’m sorry you lost contact with your Aunt. I have lost contact with a few dear people as well. It’s so frustrating when one cannot find them…but you carry the love for her in your heart. Your neighbor really was creepy…

    1. Yikes, I pushed the reply button too fast! LOL Yes the neighbor was creepy, I was glad when we moved and left him behind. I’m going to keep trying to find my aunt. For all I know she passed all ready.

  4. The sink is very similar to the one in my mom’s kitchen. I think there was a door on the lower left, rather than two drawers. Your picture really took me back there. You may be onto something with your noncommercial commercial. 🙂 Have a great week!

    1. thank you Patti, yes the kitchen sink from what I remember didn’t have drawers in it just doors, but this is as close as I could get picture wise. Have a wonderful day!

  5. As a person who really only cooks about 3 or 4 times a year, this is a strange preference but oh my gosh I love walk-in pantries. So many houses are built without them now. Where is the food supposed to be?!

*My perception may be skewed due to the fact I grew up in a house of 7, with 5 men, so there was a lot of food always.

    1. I actually like walk in pantries too, and wish I could afford one. So now the food takes up all your cupboard space. Makes no sense, right? Where I live now I have a very small pantry, but at least I have a place for food!

  6. Good idea about the commercials. It show that you don’t watch TV. Today you can DVR (record) and start watching the recording ten minutes later so you can fast forward the commercial. I think the commercials get louder so you can run to the bathroom or kitchen so you can hurry back when your show starts. I had limited my TV watching and some how got sucked in by a few shows. I prefer a good old movie.

    1. What little I manage to see on TV does not interest me into watching it. I have my computer and I’m happy. I know I’m way out of touch as far as DVR and stuff. 🙂

  7. I read this late last night and was no longer coherent. Now that it’s daybreak, I’ll tell you that it was interesting to learn about some of the places you lived. I don’t remember kitchens. We weren’t in them long. Interesting about pantries though. The last house my ex and I bought was built by a Mormon and the pantry was a walk-in room. There was more cupboard space in that kitchen than all my kitchens together. My ex stuffed every inch of it. I have a tiny one in my kitchen now. I don’t have much in staples other than for baking for holidays. I had an aunt that I cherished too. She saved my life. Good luck finding out about yours. The fun thing about these posts is that you tell about yourself so we feel free to tell you about ourselves. Time to get back to work. Second cup is empty and I’m still in bed. 🙂

    1. I enjoy learning about my friends. 🙂
I like pantries, I have a small one now.

Was your ex a hoarder? You’ve mentioned several times how much stuff he had. I had a boyfriend like that. I loved him, he was a wonderful man, but he hoarded things, so did his mother. People are interesting.

      1. He walked the line between pack rat/ hoarder very closely. His first wife was TV grade hoarder. He just kept lots of stuff, “just in case” He was generous with his stuff so therein lays the line. Hoarders let go of nothing. Most of his friends called him ____ 2 or more. If he had something, he had 2 at least. It’s contagious. When he couldn’t collect for himself anymore, he started bringing me fabric, lace things for the kitchen. He had 12 pressure cookers lined up in that pantry. I didn’t take one with me. I left most of the kitchen, all the furniture but my bed and dresser. What I did take was sold to have grocery money. 🙂 I’m still paring down.

        1. I guess my boyfriend wasn’t a hoarder either, as he would have gave anyone anything if he could have. I too am still paring down, I have found I don’t need near as much stuff as I did when I was younger. 🙂
