Flashback Friday

Hello, people!

Hope this will be the start of a wonderful weekend! I’d also like to take this opportunity to say how happy I am with SCOTUS for passing the same-sex marriage law.

I thought I would bring back a little bitty story I did some time ago. It was for the WordPress Weekly Writing Challenge. It’s always been one of my favorites. Hope you enjoy my flash of the past.

For that week’s WordPress weekly writing challenge, we were to write a fifty-word story. Not five thousand, not five hundred, but precisely fifty words. Here’s mine…

My palm is sweaty where I  grasp you, my hand against your firmness.  My breath quickens when I think of what is to come. A long-term affair continues. My eyes close, lips purse. First your smell hits my nose. Ah, so seductive, you are.  Coffee, how I love thee.

Writing Advice From A Novice Writer

Writing advice…it’s everywhere!

Buyer or, in this case, reader beware. Writing advice is like assholes people, everyone has one and sometimes it’s full of bull****.  That’s what I found out.

tumblr_m8t7lqO7jW1qery84

As most of you know, I’ve been writing a story on this blog for the last couple of months, (I’m turning that story into a book).  Just finished it last week. It was wonderful having you all come along for the ride!

I’ll let you in on a secret though. I almost didn’t finish it. If you were reading along as I posted you would have noticed me getting slower and slower with my story posts. That’s because I made the fatal mistake of reading articles and posts on writing. How to do it, what not to do, the mistakes amateur writers make. So forth and so on…..

Reading all those advice postings made me stop writing! Seriously, it did. They scared the crap out of me! So I’m writing a post of my own as a warning to all you writers out there.

DON’T READ POSTS OR ARTICLES ON HOW TO WRITE!

Just don’t do it if you are writing a book. They will fill you full of doubts and stop you in your tracks.

Why? Because they are so contradictory!  One article will say do this in your writing….then the  next one will say DON’T do that!

I read one post the other day on what beginning writers should do. They said we should always write an outline of our story. ALWAYS. A full and detailed outline of our story. Um, no. I can’t and won’t do that. That’s what writing the story is for! I tried it once. Once. Never again. I wrote that detailed outline and couldn’t write the book. Why? I already wrote it! Why write it twice?

tumblr_ndi15fZRpu1syd000o1_500

Now I know some will say I wouldn’t have written it twice. The outline is the guidelines of your story. The more of a guideline, the easier to write the book! Now, it might work for some people, but not for me. Because I lose interest after writing the outline. I feel like I’ve already written the first draft, kind of. One with lots of space to fill in. Why not just write the damn book?

Besides, my characters high jack my story to write their own. I’m just the tool they use to write it down. I’m just the pen. They are the writers.

So that’s what I do. Now, I admit I do write a rough outline. Very rough. So rough that most people wouldn’t even call it an outline. That’s ok. I understand it and that’s all that matters in the end.

You know the ones that scared me the most? The ones full of ‘rules’. Who makes up these rules? Writers do! Yes, other writers make rules for writers.

I understand having to use good grammar, good punctuation. That just makes sense. Who wants to read a book full of mistakes? Not me! Then I read rules that say something like this:

never use a verb other than “said” to carry dialogue.

Well, I know I broke that one. A lot. And I will keep breaking that one.

Oh, also I’m not supposed to use exclamation points. Yeah, well stuff it! I’ll use it if I want to!

Now not all advice is bad advice. I’m not saying ignore it all, just ignore the ones that don’t work for you. The best piece of advice I saw is attributed to Margaret Atwood;

Hold the reader’s attention. (This is likely to work better if you can hold your own.) But you don’t know who the reader is, so it’s like shooting fish with a slingshot in the dark. What fascinates A will bore the pants off B.

Now that makes sense to me. All readers are different. They will take different things away from a story. They won’t all like the same things, but they also won’t all dislike the same things.

So my piece of advice is just write what pleases you. Or just write. Ignore all the advice out there. Writers don’t all write the same, thank goodness. Wouldn’t it be boring if they did?

I sent an email to a very special friend of mine. I told her, I’m scared to write anymore, I’m doing it all wrong according to writing rules I’ve read. People will hate my writing! Why am I even trying? You know what she said? QUIT READING WRITING POSTS! Just stop it!

She was right too. I stopped reading writing advice articles and just got back into writing my story. I found my joy again in the story and my characters.

My advice to you? You want to write, just write. Sit your butt down and write that story, that book, that poem, whatever it is you want to write. Don’t let anyone take that joy away from you!

JUST WRITE!

If We Were Having Coffee

If We Were Having Coffee

Hello, People!

Come on in! Have a comfy seat and a drink of your choice. I will be having my usual coffee. Ah, good stuff.

I do hope everyone is having a great weekend. Where does the time fly? It’s heading toward the end of June already! For most of us, this weekend is Father’s Day weekend. All who celebrate it, I hope you have a wonderful day!

I usually don’t celebrate it. My dad passed away going on twelve years now. I miss him all the time. I don’t need a special day to tell him in my heart that I love him. I believe he knew it then and knows it now.

It’s also the Summer Solstice this weekend. Summer will be officially here. It’s the longest day of the year, too. I like it when it’s still daylight at 10:30 pm. 🙂 I may have to take some pictures and post them. The evening skies are beautiful that time of night.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you how excited I am that I finished posting ‘The ABC’s of Death’ this past week. Of course, the work doesn’t stop now. I am going to give it a few weeks rest while I edit ‘The Canine Caper’ (formally The Man in the Fedora). Then I will be starting the edits on the ABC’s (retitled A Case of Deceit).

I’d also tell you that I have a new book cover for the Canine Caper! I thought it turned out very well and I will be revealing that in the next week or so. Things are moving right along on the road to publishing both stories!

I want to thank all of you who took my poll on the ABC story. Your comments and votes will help me so much in the editing of this story. If you have read the story and haven’t taken the poll yet, you can find it…here.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell my volunteer Beta readers that soon you will find the story in your email! Thank you for being patient, offering to help and being just great friends. I plan on hitting the editing really hard this coming week to get it ready for you readers to pick it apart. Really, that’s your job! I know you will do it well with the best interest of helping me put out the best story I can. You guys are the greatest!

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that on a personal side, I’ve been having a few health problems. Bottom line, too much stress. My blood pressure is up and refuses to come down. Scary stuff since heart problems run in my family. My doctor has tried two different medications and both have made me ill. Terrible side effects. So now we have to try something else. Of course, less stress would help. Ha! Don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Also, as always my doctor says those dreaded words, “lose weight”. Yeah, doc, I wish it was that damn easy. Eh, I’ll die when it’s my time. 😉

If we were having coffee, I’d ask you about your week. How is everything with you? I’m here to listen and be a friend. Goodness, you have listened to me enough!

Until next time, have a good day and stay in touch!

Survey for Readers of ‘The ABC’s of Death Story

Hello, people!

funny-pictures-pardon-me-do-you-have-a-few-minutes-to-answer-a-short-survey

I wanted to thank all of you who have read my postings on ‘The ABC’s of Death’ story. I so hope all of you enjoyed reading it and following along as I wrote my book. It was a wonderful achievement of mine to have brought you along on my journey of writing.

Two and a half months, nearly 46,000 words later we have reached the conclusion of the story. It was quite a ride! Now the real work begins… the editing phase.

With that in mind, I am posting a survey for all of you that read the story. It is completely anonymous. I won’t know who said what, so PLEASE be completely honest with your answers. This will help me so much in the editing phase. You have been along on the writing of the story, I feel you should have a say in the editing, too.

Just answer the questions as honestly as you can. I appreciate it. You guys rock!!

Sam And Me Comic

Hello, people!

Today’s post is courtesy of Sam! My little buddy is bored with his Mom. He says we don’t play anymore, we don’t go sit outside, we don’t do anything! LOL

I’ve been busy working on the last chapter of ‘The ABC’s of Death’. I should have it posted within the next day or so. Exciting! It’s been two and a half months of me writing almost exclusively for this story. Now it’s nearing the end…of the story, not my characters.

I have a rough outline for the next Dee and Tee adventure! That will be revealed soon. I’m also in the middle of edits on ‘The Man in the Fedora’. I have re-named it for publishing. I am also in the middle of having a new book cover done. Soon to be ready, I hope!

But…I will let you in on the new title to the story! It’s going to be called…are you ready…you sure???? It’s going to be called…‘The Canine Caper’.

What do you think? Let me know!

In the meantime, poor Sam is bored with me hunched over the old keyboard all day, every day. Poor thing. I will have to get him a new toy soon. Maybe he will forgive me. Maybe.

A Little Update

Hello, people!

I do hope your week is going well.

news_anim

I just wanted to update you on what I’ve been doing the last four or five days. Yes, I have been writing. I’m working on the last chapter(s) for The ABC’s of Death. I want to get it right for all my loyal readers. Can you believe it’s been going on for two months now?! You have stuck with me through it all, I appreciate it more than you know. ❤

I have also begun editing the first story in the DeeDee Watson, PI series (yes it is going to be a series!), ‘The Man in the Fedora’. I’m trying to get it ready for publishing. My goal is to publish both stories at the same time. I’m pushing for a September or early October date. Yes, it’s going to be a lot of hard work, but so worth it!

Be prepared for a surprise in a few weeks. That’s when I hope to reveal the new title and book cover for the Fedora story. You heard correctly! I am re-titling it AND doing a new book cover! Exciting times ahead, my friends!

I will also let you know that I will have a new title and book cover for The ABC’s of Death when I publish. I want it to fit in the new series look that I have in my head. I already have a rough outline of the third book in the series! More on that later.

A few other things, at the end of the ABC’s of Death, I will have a short survey for all of you who are reading it. It will help me tremendously when it comes time to edit if you fill out the survey for me. I’ll post more on that later, also.

I’m also in the market for Beta Readers. A beta reader is a person who will read the book and look for any inconsistencies, plot holes or just plain mistakes in the story for me. I look at this story a million times and I still miss things. Beta readers are an important part of pre-publishing. The story you will read will be the second-to-last editing before publishing.

help

As a reward and since I’m broke. I am offering my Beta Readers a free copy of my book once it’s published! I am also offering a dedication to you on my dedication page inside the book! If you are interested in being a Beta Reader for me, send me an email via my contact page! It won’t be for a few months yet, so I will be posting reminders now and then. Any offers of help are deeply appreciated!

Well, that’s it for now. I need to get my butt back to Dee, Tee, Fedora and the others!

RawrLove for Rara

Please give if you can. Every little bit helps. Thank you!

Fear No Weebles

We interrupt our regular programming (I know, I know, the programming hasn’t been regular for a while, I’m getting to that) to bring you this very important message…….

This one is for Rara, the well-loved blogger whom you may know as Rarasaur. As you may already know, Rara has been serving a prison sentence for the past year—we don’t have to get into the details here—she has written about her situation in detail on her blog. Suffice it to say, she was given a bum rap. She’s scheduled to be released in a few months.

A few weeks ago, her beloved husband, whom you may know as Grayson Queen (also known as Dave), died suddenly. He died way too soon and way too young. His last posts are haunting; he wrote of not feeling well and described some troubling symptoms. And then the posts stopped.
