Hello, people!
As you can tell by the post title I am deep into the editing mode for my stories ‘The Canine Caper’ and ‘A Case of Deceit’. (formally ‘The Man in the Fedora’ and ‘The ABC’s of Death’)
Call me crazy. I’m editing both almost at the same time. Plus, a friend and I are working on a new book cover for the Canine Caper. I just wasn’t happy with the one I showed you guys a few days ago. Yeah, I’ve been busy.
Those are my reasons for not being around much lately. Thank you to J for checking up on me yesterday when she couldn’t find me around the blog world. Thanks for caring J!
So, to prove I am alive and kicking I decided to do a post on the editing phase of things. It’s going to be an easy post. Just quotes from other people on editing. Yeah, I’m just that busy (or lazy) 😉
I don’t mind the editing part. I like seeing my stories grow stronger and better with each pass. For me, the hard part is stopping! I mean, where do you stop? How many times do you go over the same story and finally say…enough? That part right there is the hardest part.
If anyone out there has a foolproof way of doing this editing gig, let me know. Now I know a lot of you would say, hire an editor! I would, but I can’t as I’m broke. So it falls to me to kill my darlings myself.
Yay, you are alive and editing! 🙂
Love the quotes 😀

Oh, what did all those poor words ever do to be so cruelly edited? 😉

They just were wrong for the part…I’m ruthless…just ruthless! 😉

Look at the bright side – you are editing! Taking an objective scalpel to your words requires tons of bravery.
Don’t stop until you are done 🙂

Thanks! I’m either brave or stupid…not sure at this point which it is. 😉

I tend to edit myself into oblivion! You just have to take that leap and say ‘enough is enough’. Best of luck with it all, Jackie 😀

Thanks Dianne! Good luck to you also! You are still writing aren’t you? 🙂

I envy your problem since I’d like to get to the point where I have a finished product to edit. As to when to stop, well, i have no friggin’ clue.

Just keep writing Fishy, you’ll get there. As for the editing. I guess I’ll stop sooner or later, sooner would be better…I hope.

Those are such excellent quotes, Jackie! I found the stopping also to be the most difficult part. Just because you know the story can still get just a little better 🙂 Hugs to the Editor!

Thank you tiny! Yes, that’s it exactly! You know the story can get better, but I usually stop when my eyes start to cross. LOL ❤

In all the chaos lately I have neglected to do my reading duties. Crap. I’ve got it printed and sitting here, I’ll get to it today, I promise.

Some of those quotes are really scary! But at least when you are editing you know you’re getting really close to the end product. I’m very close to finishing the first draft of my latest book but I will edit another one before I edit that one. I like to have a gap so I can come back to it with a fresh eye. I think we are all the same; we love the writing but don’t enjoy the editing so much. But I’m going to try to take a leaf out of Seumas’s book and learn to love the editing; it’s the editing that buffs up the shine. Happy buffing, Jackie xxx

I actually don’t mind the editing. It’s ‘where do you stop the editing’ that gets me. 🙂 I like Seumas’s outlook on it too. Thanks Jeanette! xx

Yes, it’s a necessary part of writing and really I don’t mind it at all. I enjoy seeing my writing become leaner and better. Thanks! 🙂

I did five edits. My brother said to me stop because you will keep editing and never finished. Now my novel is in the hands of friends who are going to point out typos and then I’ll see where it goes from there.

Yeah, I have the first story with my beta readers, I’m working on the second pass of edits with the second story. Your brother is right. We would never get done if we didn’t stop somewhere.
