Monday Meeting ~~ September 21, 2015

Monday Meeting

Good Monday everyone! I do hope your weekend was a good one. Let’s get this meeting started.

Come on in. Find what you want to drink on the side table, also there are lots of things to munch on. Come, sit, relax and I’ll tell you about my week and then you can tell me about yours.

I haven’t been doing a lot this past week. More edits on A Case of Deceit. I’m almost done with the first major edits. Whooohooo! Then comes the fine tuning and time for my beta readers. So if you want to be a beta reader, please do let me know.

I am so looking forward to starting work on the next book in the DeeDee Watson, PI series. It’s going to be a fun time had by all. Well except the dead person, but I don’t want to give too much away. 😉

Fall has arrived early in my corner of Canada. The neighbor’s huge tree is turning colors already, at least a month too soon. I do hope this doesn’t mean a long hard winter. I might have to take a picture of it. The wind here as been awful! Blowing day and night. You’d think we live in a wind tunnel.

I learned a scary lesson the other day. I brought up Word to start my edits for the day and the program said the folder no longer existed! It said that I had deleted it! Now, I know I didn’t delete it. I am very conscientious about saving my work. Also, Word saves the work automatically. So I couldn’t figure out how it got deleted! All my edits…gone! Weeks worth. But, then I remember that I have Dropbox and I had set that up to automatically save my work in Word too. So my fingers flew to Dropbox and found the folder! All was not lost.

But…I usually save my books on a flash drive too and this time I had not done that. No more being lazy! Every day after edits are done I now save it in Dropbox AND on a  flash drive. Whew, I am NOT going to lose weeks of hard work because I was too lazy to save it in several places. I got my hand slapped good and proper. Lesson learned.

On the husband front…he now has an appointment with a therapist for Wednesday of this week. So that’s a good thing. The man who came out to the house to evaluate the husband will sit in on the first appointment to help the husband get comfortable with it. I am not going to the therapist with him unless they specifically want me there. I told the husband I want him to feel comfortable with saying anything he wants to the therapist, so I thought it was best I didn’t attend. I do hope he will get some more help with his depression. Maybe the pressure on me will ease a bit too.

I had a pleasant surprise last week also when I called my mother. She told me she wants a sweatshirt that says ‘Canada’ on it…from Canada. So now I am on the hunt for a sweatshirt! I have no idea why she insists she needs one from here, but if it makes her happy, then I will do my best to find one. Somehow I don’t think it will be too daunting a task. 😉 Especially since she is sending me the money for it. She is too funny sometimes. She told me her dialysis doctor told her she is too skinny and she needs to put on some weight. So she said she bought herself some ice cream for the first time in ages. Enjoy yourself Mom! You’re only 86 years young once in your life is what I told her.

Other than my dog Sam catching another mouse, things have been quiet around here. Oh yes, I have two cats. Big cats! But they are a bit on the lazy side. The biggest cat caught the mouse first, then promptly let it go in the living room. This was before I got up the other morning. So it was up to Sam to catch the darn thing for me! Which he did. That little dog is fast! He doesn’t let up either. It took a couple of hours, but he caught it and killed it. I disposed of it. Ugh. Welcome, Autumn to my side of the world! We live in the country, so every fall we have the mice issue. They don’t last long in the house.

That’s about it for me, pretty boring week actually. But that’s ok too, as I don’t like drama. Except in books….. 😉

How have you been doing? Anything exciting happening?

  1. Oh! Now I want a Canada sweatshirt! Though, I may just buy one on Amazon and say it’s in you and my other friendies up North’s honor 😀

  2. Quiet weeks are good. Mines been nice except for the annual invasion of stink bugs. My neighbor said it looks like a Hitchcock movie here but she wishes the Hitchcock birds would come eat the bugs. You can barely get in and out the door. Still healing and struggling with the vision. I understand the hubby’s depression. Hope the therapy helps. Computers are a blessing and a curse. Just think of typing all that out on a machine over and over again each time you have to make changes. I would want a hard copy, just in case. That’s a lot of ink and paper though. You are wise to keep saving it in lots of places. I can feel your heart hit your stomach when you saw that. Have a good week Jackie. Hugs.

    1. No stink bugs here…yet. Not that I’ve seen anyway. I remember before computers and having to type stuff over and over. Whew, glad those days are gone. I do hope your vision clears up soon Marlene. You have a good week also. Big Hugs.

      1. We seem to be in a pocket that they breed in. I don’t notice them when I leave my little area. We are getting cold nights so I’m hoping that they go dormant again. I guess it the price you pay to have woods behind the house. Best of luck with the hubby’s treatments. Hugs, M

  3. Your mother is very proud of you, and she’s going to show you off by wearing the sweatshirt. When people ask her about it, she will tell them about her “famous” author daughter up there in Canada. 🙂

I feel your pain on the lost file. I save my work to my host web server, thumb drives, and an external hard drive. The other day, I forgot to take the thumb drive out of the laptop when I first sat down to type. I prefer to save to the desktop until I’m ready to transfer. I’ve had too many thumb drives go bad on me. Anyway … I was distracted and had to leave my desk for a few hours, when I came back, the laptop insisted my work couldn’t be saved and it erased the file from the thumb drive. Stupid laptop. At least I had only written two paragraphs before I was distracted. But I am like you – a stickler for saving work! Whenever I’ve had to rewrite something from scratch, it’s never as good as the first time.

And mice! Yes, we get them in the fall, too. Usually two or three little baby field mice. Our dog is worthless when it comes to catching them.

Glad you had a nice weekend. I’m back to the grind writing. I have a deadline coming up in nine days. The book HAS TO BE FINISHED! 🙂

And I’m sending thoughts and good wishes for a good appointment for the husband.

    1. Maddie!! Hm, not sure how proud mom is of me. 😉
It’s terrible when we lose stuff on the computer. I don’t like it. I’ve never had a flash drive go bad…yet. I hope I haven’t jinxed myself. ha!
Write…write…write! Yah Maddie!! 🙂 big hugs girl.

  4. Oh dear. That was a close call with your work! I learned that lesson quite a time ago when I lost couple of weeks worth of report written for work. After that, no more laziness 🙂 I’ll email you soon. Hugs!

  5. Sounds like things are looking up. In contact with mom, help for hubby. Mice caught by Sammy great!! Those mice are crawling in my ceiling too. It’s the one thing I hate about this time of year.

  6. So relieved for you that you didn’t lose all your edits! I’m horrible about backing up my files so hopefully your close call will spur me to be better about it.

I’m happy your husband is finally getting the help he needs, it’s been way too long that he’s suffered and you’ve had to suffer alongside him.

I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for a slow week I could use one.
