Monday Meeting ~~ December 7, 2015

Today’s meeting has some good news in it and some bad news. Let’s get started.

Monday Meeting

Grab a warm beverage and sit a bit with me. I have my regular coffee. Can’t live without this stuff. I hope you have had a good weekend. Everyone in the holiday spirit yet? No? Not quite? Like me, I’m not there yet.

Yes, I know I’m procrastinating a bit here. I debated for a while whether I wanted to post the bad news today. Then I thought…you guys have been with me since the beginning of the cancer battle with the husband and I appreciate it more than you know.

We just got back a little while ago from seeing his surgeon for a post-operation check up. The husband is healing nicely, although he had a rough weekend. The doctor said he will have good days and bad days and that soon the good days should outnumber the bad as far as the pain is concerned with his surgery. It’s a slow healing process. Unfortunately, the doctor also had some bad news to tell us.

The husband had what the doctor says is ‘high level 2’ cancer. He’s not out of the woods yet. He needs chemo. When they did the blood tests and biopsy of the tumor it was determined that the cancer cells did break through the colon walls. Good news is it didn’t affect his lymph nodes or any of his organs. The doctor wants the husband to have chemo to “mop up any stray cancer cells” that are in his body.

The husband doesn’t want to do chemo sessions.

We discussed things and I asked him to at least talk to the cancer clinic, get the information on what kind of chemo he would have to take, for how long and what were the possible side effects before he makes a final decision. He agreed to that. He still may say no. It’s his decision. I will stand with him on whatever he decides. I know he would do the same for me.

So the fight continues.

Sam (c) JLPhillips 2013

On the good news front. I won a contest! Yay me! I just wish it was for writing. LOL It’s not. I entered Sam (my dog for those who don’t know) into a contest with CertainTeed Insulation in Canada to win a custom-made doghouse and a $2500 dollar gift certificate to Lowe’s early last month and found out Friday afternoon Sam and I won! I was so thrilled! I couldn’t say anything until they made their announcement on Facebook today. You can find it ……here

I won the doghouse made by Damon Bennett. As for the $2500 dollar gift certificate that is going to buy us a refrigerator and dishwasher! Maybe a new wash machine too if I can squeeze it in. I can’t believe I won! We need a new fridge too as the one we have is going out. You can’t put anything on the top shelf you don’t want frozen because that’s what it does. It freezes things on the top shelf and rots things in the crisper. The dishwasher hasn’t worked in two years. The wash machine works but is absolutely huge and I need a stick to get the clothes out of the bottom of it, as I’m too short to reach them. So I am so looking forward to shopping for these appliances!

The husband and I were determined to have a good Christmas anyway because I have one of a kind friends that were going to make sure we did. 🙂 This win just puts that cherry and extra bits on an already fabulous cake.

So, as always in life, there is the good that balances the bad. Almost.

What extra goodie are you planning for this Christmas?

A Can of Corn

I saw something on Facebook last night that got me a bit upset. Now, I know Facebook is good for that. Upsetting people. What I saw last night I took a bit personal and I’ll tell you why.

Someone made a Facebook status about shopping at the grocery store and the checkout lady asking if they wanted to donate to the food bank. They joked about it. One of their followers said something along the lines of….’they could donate a can of corn, at least whoever gets it will have their poop decorated for Christmas’.

DSC_0219-1024x685

Meaning that corn is hard to digest and the poor person who ate the corn will have something decorated for Christmas. I’m sorry, but I found the whole thing in very bad taste in more ways than one. I thought about it most of the night. It was on my mind first thing when I got up this morning. So I decided to write a post on why this was wrong and why it upset me.

Normally I don’t let things on Facebook bother me. I’m not on it that much and well…..people are stupid a lot of times. I don’t tolerate stupid that well.

The husband and I get a food basket from our local food bank every month. Yeah, I’m that person who will get that can of corn. But hey, at least I’ll have something decorated for Christmas.

Or it could be that nice elderly lady next door or across the street. You know the one. The one who always smiles and waves at you and the kids. Who gives you homemade cookies every Christmas. Yeah, that nice old lady.

The one whose husband died a few years ago and now it’s just her and her cat. The one who if you went in her house and looked in her cupboards you would find most of them empty of food. Because she can’t afford to go to that nice grocery store and stock up. She gets a food hamper every month from the food bank. If she didn’t do that, she would go hungry. Even that can of corn is welcomed in her home. It’s something to eat.

Sure, she gets retirement money every month. But it’s not enough to cover the bills and food. The bills come first. She doesn’t want to lose the house her  husband and her worked so hard all their married lives to have. They even had some savings. I nice little nest egg for their retirement years. That got ate up when he got sick suddenly. Then he died. The nest egg gone. The money she has coming in is now half of what it was. Just enough to pay the bills, if she keeps the thermostat down.

Most of the clients of food banks are the elderly. Did you know that? It’s true……look it up. I did.

473283

As for the old neighbor…She gives you those delicious homemade cookies every Christmas because she hoards what little sugar she gets from the food bank. Maybe the flour too. She likes to make cookies for your kids. As she doesn’t see her kids or grandkids that often. So she hoards through the year what she needs for baking and eats what she can.

Let me tell you a bit about food bank hampers. Every food bank is different because it depends on donations. What you get depends on what’s given. Like that can of corn. A typical food bank hamper for me and the husband consists of this:

  • boxes of Kraft dinner (usually 3)
  • cans of baked beans (usually 2)
  • can of spaghetti sauce
  • bag of spaghetti noodles
  • cans of soup (usually 2 or 3)
  • sometimes a box of cereal
  • if we are really lucky…a dozen eggs
  • small bag of flour (most times not)
  • bag of dried beans
  • small container of juice
  • can of tomatoes
  • bag of oatmeal
  • can of vegetables (corn, green beans or wax beans)

If we are really lucky we get some kind of meat. Usually not, though. We might get a package of hotdogs, or a pound of hamburger. One time we got a single piece of chicken. Which we had to throw away because when we thawed it out…it was spoiled. We’ve thrown away most of the meat we have gotten because it was rotten. Yeah, we are living high off the hog.

That’s what that old neighbor gets too. Maybe she is diabetic like I am. Oh, then we get a special bag of goodies from the food bank. It is always the same. Always.

  • two small plastic bags of oatmeal
  • two cans of pineapple chunks
  • two tiny containers of applesauce or jello (you know the kind, usually you can buy them 6 to a package. I get two of the six.)
  • plastic bag of dried beans

Why they insist on giving a diabetic cans of pineapple is beyond me. They are very high in natural sugar. Duh….diabetic.

So, when someone makes fun about giving donations to food banks….think a little. Because of medical issues the husband and I can’t work. Or we would be working. We don’t like having to get food bank hampers. We  hate it. But, we have to eat.

So does most elderly. Oh yeah, that neighbor? She has a cat. The cat is her only companion. It’s company on long lonely days and nights. It’s warmth on cold winter evenings. So on the months she might get a couple of cans of cheap tuna. She feeds her cat the tuna. She doesn’t eat it herself. The cat has to eat too and it usually does before she does. Because that’s what we do.

So, enjoy those homemade cookies.

We’ll be looking forward to that can of corn. At least something will be decorated this Christmas.

Update and a Reminder!

Hello, People.

It’s been a very busy and stressful last couple of days for me. Whew! Yesterday morning the husband had his colon operation. They started at 9 am and he didn’t get into his hospital room until 3 pm. It was a long day of waiting. I went to see him yesterday afternoon and he was still pretty groggy and out of it. I wasn’t able to talk to the doctor, but the nurses said he was doing well. His son and I only stayed for a short while. Just to assure us he was ok, then we left and let him have his rest.

rron215l_zps3e4a744b

I was there again bright and early this morning. He looked good but was in pain (of course). He told me the doctor had been in to see him around 5 am this morning. That’s when I found out the reason for the surgery taking so long yesterday. Seems they closed him up after the surgery but couldn’t stop the bleeding. His blood pressure went down to 50/30. They had to give him a transfusion and get him stable before he could go to the recovery room.

Last night and this morning he was still bleeding internally. They are monitoring him and if it keeps up through today the doctor told him they will take him back to surgery, reopen  him up and try to repair it so he stops bleeding. Seems sometimes the body will stop it itself but if not he goes back in. Always seems to be another road block for him.

He was in good spirits this morning. His color was good and he was joking around, so that helps. I think he was just relieved it was over with, or almost. As for the cancerous tumor, it’s all gone along with 1/3 of his colon. They didn’t find any more masses or tumors when they operated, so there is good news too.

As for me. I’m tired but less stressed knowing he will be ok. At least I’m pretty sure he will be ok.

Thanks for all the warm thoughts. It does help. I do hope everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving tomorrow will have a wonderful day!

Monday Meeting ~ November 23, 2015

Well, look at this! I’m actually having a Monday Meeting on a Monday. Hope you can join me.

Monday Meeting

Hello and thank you for reading. I have a few things to catch you up on today. So, let’s start shall we.

First on the husband front. His colon surgery is tomorrow morning at 9 am. He has to be at the hospital at 6:30 am for check in and pre-op. So, if you don’t see a post from me tomorrow that will be the reason why. Of course, if I was smart I would schedule a post to happen tomorrow, but not sure I’m that smart or ambitious. Ha! I might do a quick post just to let you guys know how he is doing.

He’ll be in the hospital for about 3 to 7 days, depending on how he does. He’s just glad to finally get it over with. Also, during his other pre-op tests last week they found he had some major blockage in his carotid artery on the right side of his neck. Plaque buildup they told us, which could lead to a stroke. Sigh. At least they found it BEFORE he has a stroke. They told us that they will be extra vigilant during the operation and that he can have it dealt with afterward. Meaning, he will be on cholesterol pills and they might have to operate on his artery to clear the blockage. We will face this further bad news later on. Let’s deal with the cancer first.

Poor man, he will be paranoid about tests if this keeps up. I told him, at least they are finding these things out before anything major happens, so it’s a good thing. Please keep him in your thoughts people. All the positive energy helps. Thank you.

A tiny bit of good news. I’ve lost some weight! Yay me. With all the worry, stress, and running around the hospital I’ve managed to lose a few pounds. Now I just need to keep going. Without the worry and stress, though. So I’m not the one having the stroke. My blood pressure is still high and that has me worried too, which doesn’t help. Always something around here with us old folk.

On the book front. I am being super optimistic about the success of the husbands operation and beating cancer that I have scheduled a sale on BOTH my books this week to celebrate. The first book, The Canine Caper will be for FREE on November 25 – 26th! The second book, A Case of Deceit will also be on sale starting November 24th until the 27th. For the first 18 hrs the book will be for 99 cents, then every 18 hrs the price will go up until it hits the regular price. So grab it early for the best price!

Either book (or better yet, both books together) would make a great Christmas gift for any reader in your family! The second book, A Case of Deceit is also available in paperback from CreateSpace, which you can click on through Amazon.

I do hope everyone has an amazing week. See you next time!

Monday Meeting ~~ Isn’t This Monday?

Hello, People!

Monday Meeting

Yes, once again I’m having my Monday Meeting on a Tuesday. If anyone noticed, which I doubt anyone did, I didn’t do a post at all yesterday. Damn there went my perfect posting month. I’m afraid there will be a few more missing days before the end of this month. I’m ok with it. More important things are going on.

So grab a comfy chair, your favorite drink and lend an ear or in this case, eyes.

As many of you know the husband has colon cancer. The doctors are moving fast on this, which is a good thing. His surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday, the 24th of November. I believe that’s about a month from diagnosis to surgery. There is a lot of things for him and I to do before his surgery, mostly him. I’m just there to help remember things and keep him on time. We’ve spent more time at the hospital these last few weeks then we’ve spent in the last fifteen years. One thing I have noticed…they have the most uncomfortable chairs my sorry butt has ever sat on! It’s a lot of hurry up and waiting.

Yesterday was one of those days. We didn’t know until Friday afternoon that he had to be at the hospital on Monday morning for pre-op. What they told me on the phone was he had a couple of people to see, one doctor and the anesthesiologist. Wouldn’t take long at all. I wonder if that is hospital talk for ‘it will take hours and hours’. Ha! Because that is what it did.

We got there in good time, got registered, was sent for him to have an EKG done. Wasn’t expecting that. Off we go to the other side of the hospital. That tech after she is done, sends us off to finally talk to the first doctor, which I’m still not sure why, but hey, who am I to question it. He asked dozens of questions, wrote down all the meds the husband was on and listened to his breathing. That took about thirty minutes. He said to wait where we were, a nurse was going to come in and explain some things and ask some more questions. Ok, more questions, what more could they ask?

The friendly nurse comes in with a handful of brochures and sheets of paper. She asks thousands of questions, again writes down his meds, explains all the procedures to us and kept calling the husband ‘sir’. I would just smile every time he winced at her ‘sirs’. I almost laughed when she lectured him about what a good wife and helper I was and not for him to take advantage of me in the coming weeks. Hahaha. I loved that. He thought it was funny, so no harm done.

Then it was time for the anesthesiologist to come talk to us. Very nice woman. Told us what she would be doing, asked a million questions, listened to his lungs and heart and said something about his carotid artery in his neck on right side. Hmmmm. She said she wasn’t happy with how it sounded? Felt? She says she thinks there is plaque in the artery and since she didn’t want the husband to have a stroke while under for the operation she wants it checked out. So she finishes and we were told to wait as they wanted blood samples. We wait a few minutes and the woman who draws blood comes in with her mobile blood-letting machine and takes a huge vial of blood from him. Alright! Maybe we are done now? We’ve been in the hospital for several hours by now.

Um, no we aren’t done…..

Told to go back upstairs and get an x-ray done of his lungs. The doctor wanted another one, so off we go. So far we have been from one side of the hospital to the other. Now we are going back to the other side. Poor husband is groaning in pain from his back. I’m tired and my legs are about to give out and the husbands son, who was kind enough to take us to the hospital that morning has been waiting for us for several hours by now. But we aren’t done yet…..

They call up to x-ray and tell us that we are to come back downstairs when we are done. What? Again? Argggg……

We go back downstairs for two things. They decided they want the husband to do a breathing test for his lungs. Also, the anesthesiologist wants him to have a sonogram done on this carotid artery so they are calling the radiologists to get that set up. Holy tests, Batman!

Finally, he is done for the day. The sonogram is set up for Friday morning, early. We go home and collapse. Whew, what a process!

I am glad they are so through, less chance of anything going wrong. It is very tiring though. Now, the husband just wants it over with. Don’t say I blame him. Anyway, that’s why there was no post writting yesterday. I was wore out and my mind was a disaster area. That’s also why there will be a few more posts missing next week. I’ll be at the hospital visiting a hurting hubby.

On other news…my mother got her birthday package of cards and gifts and was so happy! Thank you once again for all of you that sent her something. She says she is happily organizing all the recipes and already has a few marked to try right away. She told me that the day the package came, her home care nurse was there when she opened it. They both thought it was a really nice idea and was amazed how many cards she got and from so many places. 🙂

Now, I’m going to rest for a while and see if there is any chance in hell of catching up with everyone else’s blogs. See you!

Monday Meeting ~~ November 2, 2015

Good day, People! I hope your weekend was good and that everyone that celebrates Halloween came through it without being haunted. 😉  Let’s get to the meeting shall we?

Monday Meeting

Help yourself to all the Halloween candy you want. Grab your favorite beverage and sit a spell.

This is the second day in November and I’ve done pretty good with Nano Poblano/NaBloPoMo. I’ve made it two days in a row! Ha! Let’s see how I do in a couple of weeks. Yesterday after I posted to my blog I had to do paperwork for a government agency that might help the husband and I. Took all afternoon to get that ready. Good thing I’m organized, otherwise it would have taken much longer. Comes from being a secretary for a few years in my misspent youth.

Do they even call them secretaries anymore? Or do they call them something else now? Administrative assistant? I was that once too. Worked for the newspaper in Waco, Texas for a while. I liked Waco, it was a friendly place to live.

Anyway, I digress. The problem with government agencies is that they won’t help you unless they know every little, tiny, minute detail of your life for the past five years or more. From your finances (don’t have any), to your health (bad), and don’t forget that note from your mother (good thing she is still alive) and a pint of blood (don’t want mine, it’s contaminated). They want everything yesterday, but will get back to you in about three months….maybe (if you’re lucky).

As for the husband, he’s quiet. Too quiet. Makes me worried but not much I can do. I know he’s worried and scared. Hell, who wouldn’t be if they were told they had colon cancer. He sees his therapist this afternoon, so I’m hoping he will open up to her and tell her how he feels and get it out. I’m not holding my breath on that one. I’m keeping my eye on him and I even managed to make him laugh yesterday. Just being my silly self. Haven’t heard him laugh in a long time.

My book, A Case of Deceit came out on the 30th of October. Ready to buy in paperback and kindle. Yay!! I haven’t really pushed it, yet. I’ve been so busy with other things that I kind of put the marketing on a back burner. I’m sure most of you are not too sad about not seeing more books for sale. ha! That’s the bad thing about trying to sell your books to other authors. The good thing is they understand. 😉 If you are interested in reading a good book, click on the books on my sidebar and take a gander! Thank you.

The birthday cards that a lot of you good people sent me for my mother is being sent today. She is going to be surprised when she gets this packet! So many of you were so kind to send her little gifts too. All is appreciated and I will let you know her reaction when she gets them. She knows she is getting something and that it will be late for her birthday, but she is still excited to know they are coming. When you get to be 86, you get your excitement out of the little things in life.

That’s about it for me today. Now I need to get my butt in gear and get some more things done. See you tomorrow! Have a wonderful week!

Another Scary Story….and It’s True!

We only have a few more days before Halloween. I saved this repost for last because it’s probably the scariest. I wrote about it last year and I’m bringing it back for your reading…pleasure?

I wrote it in two parts. I’ll put a link on for the second part. I do hope you enjoy…and remember to stay away from things that give you a feeling of ‘not quite right’.  Some of you may remember it from last year, some of you may not have read it. Be prepared to be scared!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Something happened to me years ago when I was still married to the ex. Now, most who visit and read my blog know that I do believe in ghosts, spirits and things that go bump in the night. I have told you about Abe, the ghost that has lived with me since I was about 4 and who has stayed with me through countless moves, including several across the country and  with my move to Canada.
I’ve had a lot of strange things happen around me all my life. I’ve seen my fair share of strange things.  The story that I am about to tell you is probably one of the creepiest, scariest things that I’ve experienced. Now, I’ve been almost killed 2 or 3 times in my life. I’ve had a ghost that loves to follow me around. I’ve lived through my abusive ex. The true story that I’m going to share with you is something that scared me more than any of that other stuff combined.
hdr-photography-abandoned-abandoned-house-1842440-480x320
My ex decided we should move from Texas, where he was from and where we were living at the time, to Wisconsin where I was from. I had family in upper Wisconsin. Looking back, my ex  probably found  living in Texas a bit uncomfortable after having schemed and conned his way through most of Texas. Me, being the naïve woman I was back then, took him at his word that he just wanted to move so I could be closer to family and our rocky marriage could have a fresh start.
Anyway, my ex and his schemes are for another day. I called my sister and told her of our plans and asked her if she could find us a small place to rent so we could have somewhere to live once we got up there. She was all for it and said she would ask around.  She was sure she could find us something.
True to her word, she called me back a few days later and said she found a place, the rent was cheap and well within our budget, so I told her to tell the people we would take it and that we should be up there at the first of the month, which was only a few weeks away. I packed up our belongings in record time, the ex managed to get hold of a U-Haul and off we went cross-country for a new beginning.
We moved in the beginning of winter. Winter in Texas is usually pretty mild, winter in upper Wisconsin is a whole new experience, if you’ve never lived through one. We managed to get there in one piece, just a day late of our schedule due to the U-Haul breaking down in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night our second day out. The ex managed to get it going again though, and we traveled on. We made it the third day out,  traveling almost none stop. We met my sister at her place and she was going to have us follow her, first to the realtor who was renting the house, to pick up the key, then to the house we were going to call home.
We drove up to the house which was on a quiet country road. It looked nice, not too big and it had a basement that was heated so the ex could work down there. I was pleasantly surprised. We started to unpack the truck right away, as it was cold and it had started to snow. The dogs (we had 4 dogs then) were put in the basement while we unloaded and set the house up. The house we were told was hand-built by the former owners, it only had one bedroom, a living room, kitchen and one bath. It was plenty big enough for us. I thought it looked cute, but I remember from the very beginning I had these feelings of foreboding. I put it down as just being very tired.
We got the truck unloaded and I let the dogs come out of the basement and see their new home. They went sniffing around as animals will do, but I noticed they wouldn’t enter the bedroom. They would just stop in the doorway, look inside with their tails down and then back out and never go in. I was too tired and too busy to give it much more notice than that at the time.
By nightfall I was more than ready for a hot shower and bed. One of the smaller dogs always slept in the same room as I did. He was my little shadow, they all were, but he was my baby. I finished my shower said good night to the ex who was watching TV and headed for the bedroom.
I crawled into bed and waited for my dog to jump into bed with me. He didn’t. So I sat up and he was lying in the doorway. I called to him, he stood up and whined at me, but wouldn’t set foot into the bedroom. I was too tired to try to convince him so I just laid back down and drifted off to sleep. I remember briefly waking up when the ex crawled into bed.  I was having weird dreams that night. Nothing new for me as I was always having weird dreams, but these dreams turned into scary dreams rather quickly. I dreamed that I was lying in bed, in that same room and was looking toward the dark doorway. I saw someone standing there. I turned my head toward the other side of the bed and saw the ex laying there sleeping. My heart was thumping hard, I was scared, but I couldn’t seem to move.  The shadow moved into the bedroom, to my side of the bed. I couldn’t see a face or clothing or anything really, it was just a dark shadow moving toward me as if in slow motion.
I vaguely recall a couple of the dogs growling from the hallway, but my eyes were on the shadow as if something compelled me to watch. I wanted to yell, but couldn’t get my voice to work. As the deep shadow reached my side of the bed, I saw it raise its arm and I saw the distinct outline of an ax. I was terrified, but couldn’t scream! I don’t know what happened after that, as the next thing I know I feel the ex getting out of bed and turn and see the clock on the dresser saying 7am. I still felt residual fear, but finally shrugged it off as me just having a nightmare.
I got out of bed, feeling tired and a bit shaky, but again thinking I had just had a nightmare. Though that morning I did try again to coax the dogs into the bedroom and not a one would step foot in it. Later that day one of the dogs stood in the hallway and barked at the open bedroom door. I told it to hush and looked inside and didn’t see anything that he would be barking at. The room wasn’t big, it just had enough room for our bed, dresser and a nightstand. On the wall on my side of the bed was a big old mirror that came with the house. It was kind of ornate, looked old and helped make the room look bigger so I left it there.
About that time the phone rang and I went to answer it. It was my sister and during our conversation it was brought up that the previous owners of the house had both died in the bedroom. The son had it up for sale, but since house sales were really slow at that time of the year, he had been more than willing to rent it out for a time. His parents had built it themselves out of a lot of found materials. The father had worked for the town for many years and if you went down into the basement and looked up you could see the discarded road signs that made up the subflooring. Strange, but I thought kind of interesting. The man apparently  died of old age in the bedroom while being cared for by the wife. The wife later died   a few years after the husband passed, but there were rumors she didn’t die of natural causes. I just laughed it off as I knew that small towns always were full of such rumors. The son lived in the big city and didn’t want the place, even as a summer home so it was up for sale.
I finished my conversation with my sister and put more things away in the house. In the back of my mind was a niggling thought about the nightmare I had. I wondered if the house was haunted. Why wouldn’t the dogs go in the bedroom? I knew the man in the bedroom wasn’t Abe, as the shadow didn’t look like Abe. Also, the shadow with the ax felt ominous, dark and scary. That wasn’t Abe at all!
The night came and I got ready for bed. I was a bit anxious and hoped I didn’t have another nightmare. When I went into the bedroom, my dog again refused to follow me in and just lay in the doorway and watched me. I was more aware of my surroundings this night and noticed something really weird about the big mirror on the wall. There were red dots in it! I at first thought I was seeing a reflection of something, so I turned on the light and looked around. There was nothing that would cast red dots in the mirror. I looked at the mirror with the lights on and didn’t see any red dots, so I turned the light off and looked again. Sure enough, red dots! And they were moving! I yelled for the ex to come see and he came into the bedroom and saw them too. He just laughed at me and told me I was silly. That they were obviously a reflection of something and it was late and he was tired and just wanted to sleep.
So I crawled into bed, tired, anxious and just a bit scared. Something didn’t feel right to me, but the ex wasn’t listening. So I closed my eyes and tried to close my mind off too. What happened that night scared the crap out of me and convinced me that the mirror was haunted.
Grab a drink and a snack and sit a spell.
First, news on the husband. We received the biopsy results of his colonoscopy this past Thursday. It wasn’t the best news, but it wasn’t the worst. He has what they call a “suspicious” tumor in his colon. It’s not classified as cancerous, but it has the potential to become cancerous as it does have cancer cells in it. So the doctor has decided to treat it as cancerous. Confused yet? Yeah, lots of mumbo jumbo for what I would call a pre-cancerous tumor.
They will be operating to remove it soon. Unfortunately the spot it is in means they will  have to remove one-third of his colon. First, though, is a CT scan of his stomach and his lungs to make sure he doesn’t have any more tumors. That won’t happen until the 9th of November. So stay tuned for more updates and thank you for all your warm thoughts for him. We both appreciate it. Another bump in the road of a very bumpy road the last three years, but we will deal with it as best we can.
My book, A Case of Deceit is done and formatted and ready for sale on Amazon on the 30th. Yay!! It is also ready now for buying as a paperback. Just click on the button on my sidebar and enjoy! The sales of my book will help pay for gas money in the coming months for the husband and me to the various doctors and hospital visits we are sure to have to make. Thank goodness I got it done in time. Thank you for pre-ordering or purchasing it. I do hope you enjoy and please, be kind to this author and leave a review! 🙂
I have started my third book in the DeeDee Watson, PI, series. I’m excited for this one as I think it is even better than the others. (Which I hope means I’m getting better) It’s set on a cruise ship with another cast of unforgettable characters including Dee’s mother. Wait until you meet her. 😉 I love her. She’s actually a take on my own mother, but shhhh don’t tell her ok? She’s much more…..um…..well you’ll see. Let’s just say she’s nothing like Dee.
Are you ready for Halloween? Do you even celebrate it? I used to but don’t any longer. Just too tired and wore out lately. But, I love seeing all the stuff out there for it. It’s still one of my favorite holidays. I love all the ghoulish stuff. Wonder what that says about me? ha! We don’t have any kids come around. Don’t see that happening much anymore truth to tell. I think it’s more school activities and private parties. Which is safer these days, but such a shame. I remember going trick or treating in the dark and enjoying all the kids in the neighborhood doing the same. Very few houses didn’t participate back then. It was safe and a lot of fun. Sometimes the changing of the times is not a good thing.
I’ve received quite a lot of birthday cards for my mother the last few weeks. A big heartfelt thank you for all of you who have sent something! I will be mailing them all to her later this week. She knows she is getting something, but doesn’t know what yet. She’s going to love this! I will, of course, let you know what she says when she receives them. So stay tuned for that! You guys are wonderful!
That’s about it for this week. Let me know what’s going on in your little slice of the world! Above all, have some fun people!
Another True Scary Story ~~ Reposted
Hello, people! I do hope your week has been going well. Today I am bringing you another repost of a couple of years ago in honor of Halloween. It’s another true story from my life. It takes place in a very haunted home we lived in when I was young. Some of you might remember this one, a lot of you haven’t read it. I do hope you enjoy and don’t get too scared. 😉
My childhood home
Our house was a two-story duplex. One family living upstairs, my family living down. It had a scary dark basement and a dusty, dry attic. It was an old house. The closest we could figure it was built somewhere in the very early 1900’s or maybe even as early as the 1890’s.
We knew about ghosts in the house. After all we had all heard them, even the adults admitted hearing something. We saw shadows, heard footsteps, even the odd sounds now and then. I probably heard and saw more than anyone else. I think I’m more ‘in tune’ with the spirit world.
Everyone that lived in that house did not like to go to the basement. It gave off an evil aura. But I’m not going to write about that again. What I want to tell you about is the poltergeist.
We had an old fashion walk in pantry in the house. The kind that had a door and was a small room lined with shelves and cupboards and had a window on the opposite wall of the door. A small window, but at least it let in some light.
It was of course right off the kitchen. On the other side of the kitchen and pantry were a bathroom and a bedroom. The bedroom was where my little brother slept. My bedroom that I shared with my sister was on the opposite side of the house.
One night we all heard banging and crashing in the kitchen. It was the middle of the night and it was loud! We all got up, me, my sister, and my parents. We went into the kitchen and my mom turned on the light. The pantry door was open and there was flour and sugar all over the kitchen!
I mean it was tossed all over the table and the floor. The pantry was also a mess. My mother screamed my little brother’s name and she stomped toward his room. He was the only one that wasn’t in the room.
She found him sound asleep! She had to shake him hard to get him to wake up. I remember being so scared. But I also remember thinking my little brother didn’t do that. There was no way he would have incurred my parents wrath that way. It was too stupid a deed even for him to do.
My parents were known to have tempers. Both of them. Back then there wasn’t the no spanking thing there is today. We not only got spanked. We got beat if we did something wrong! My dad would use his fist on the boys. My mom would too but I was usually her favorite target. Not that night, though.
They thought my little brother was the culprit and he was only pretending to be asleep. I could see he didn’t do it. Even that young I thought he should be covered in flour and there wasn’t any in his room or on him.
I remember my mom made us clean up that kitchen and pantry before we could go back to bed. I believe it was a Friday night because I remember thinking that it was a good thing we didn’t have school in the morning.
When this happened, my brother and I were fairly young. I was probably around nine or ten, him a few years younger. We were close back then and I asked him in a whisper while we were cleaning if he did it. He swore to me he didn’t and I believed him.
So the day goes on as usual and we all get ready for bed. I was a little freaked out going to bed that night. I had never heard of a poltergeist yet. I knew about ghosts, sure, but not this particular kind. By definition a poltergeist is:
  • Poltergeist, a troublesome spirit or ghost that manifests itself by moving and influencing objects
Yeah, that pretty much says it all.
Wikipedia also says this: Single poltergeist cases often range in duration from a few hours to several months.
Our poltergeist didn’t last months, but it lasted long enough to have the whole family on edge and me and my poor brother walking on eggshells. Why me?
Because our resident poltergeist made another appearance. This time, I got blamed. Yeah, lucky me.
It happened a few weeks after the first incidence. We didn’t know it happened until we got up one morning. Again, the kitchen and pantry was filled with flour, sugar, and cereal. Also powdered milk. Anything that could make a mess was on the floor, shelves and walls. No one heard a sound this time. We all slept through it all. That in itself was rather creepy. How could all this be done without noise?
The reason I was blamed? My mom figured my brother could not be so stupid as to do it twice. So it had to be me! Crazy right? Not to her.
I swore and cried that I didn’t do it! Because I didn’t! Hell, I certainly wasn’t that stupid! And I certainly didn’t want a damn beating! So much for certainties.
It was months before it happened one more time. My dad had put a lock on the pantry door for at night. Since nothing had happened for quite some time he felt it had to have been one of us kids. Then that one last time happened.
The pantry door was locked. We were all asleep and we heard noises coming from the kitchen. So we all run out there and the kitchen is a mess! Again! The pantry door was wide open and the shelves were full of flour and sugar. Then as I was standing in the doorway while everyone else is in the kitchen blaming one another for the mess, I feel a cold breeze go by me. I mean it was icy. It gave me goosebumps.
We cleaned up the kitchen once more and my parents felt certain it was still one of us kids! How we got the lock opened? Well, they weren’t quite sure about that, but they were determined it had to be us. I believe we were all grounded for a while. As none of us did it, no one would confess.
From what I can remember it never happened again and no one would talk about it. They didn’t want to talk about it. Not that I blame them. How do you explain it?
As for me. Oh yeah, I remember. I’ll never forget that cold, icy breeze.
Monday Meeting ~~ October 19, 2015
Hello, people! Let’s get this meeting started.
Monday Meeting
Welcome to my Monday Meeting! Please, grab your favorite beverage and sit a spell. I have lots to tell you. Well, maybe not lots, but some. Ok, a few things. 😉
First, I have been super busy with editing my book A Case of Deceit, as I’m sure most are aware of. Good news. I’m done with editing and formatting and have the final edition uploaded to Amazon and soon it will also be ready for paperback release. Exciting times for this woman! It’s been a lot of hard work, lots of frustrating times and a few panic emails to a good friend. But I think I’ve done it! Don’t let anyone ever tell you producing a book is easy. Because it’s not. The writing of the book was the easy part as far as I’m concerned. It’s all the stuff behind the scenes that drove me crazy(ier)! The Amazon edition will be released on October 30th. The paperback whenever I can get it done, which I hope is this week. I’ll let you know, of course.
Now, on to the not so good news. A lot of you follow what has been going on with the husband. Thank you for your concern. We have further news on him.
On October 8th he went for his first ever colonoscopy. We managed to both live through it. The procedure itself is nothing. I’ve been through it myself once. It’s the day before that is crappy. Ha! Pun intended. Poor man. Anyway, the colonoscopy itself went well as the husband doesn’t remember anything. It’s the afterwards that didn’t go so well. They found two polyps and a tumor. Not the best of news. His doctor wanted the procedure done as the husband keeps losing weight. He is way underweight right now. Which I knew. We will know the results of the biopsies done on the polyps and tumor this Thursday the 22nd. We are hoping for the best and trying to prepare for the worst. Cancer is not a word anyone wants to hear. But, we will deal with it…whatever it is when it happens. It’s all we can do. Keep him in your thoughts this week.
Next up is a bit of a bizarre story. Wednesday morning, very early in the morning, like five am early…there was a pounding on our front door. Now this time of year, five am is still very dark out. I didn’t hear the pounding on the door, but the husband did, and of course, opened it. He’s a very trusting kind of man, almost too trusting. I woke up as Sam started to bark his ‘there is company!!’ bark. I got up, confused and tired and went into the living room. In the dark, all I could see is the husband standing over what looked to be a pile of blankets or clothes on the kitchen floor. I ask him what’s wrong, thinking he might have fallen or something. He shuffles over to me and tells me quietly that everything is ok and to just go back to bed. In the meantime, I see the pile of blankets move. What the hell??
I ask again, what is going on? The husband says, “he was cold and a little wet and seems to be beaten up so I got him some blankets. He had a fight with his mother’s boyfriend.” Now, at five am this does not even make sense! So I move further into the room and wonder why the husband has all the lights off, as he usually has at least the light over the stove on. Sam in the meantime is warily eyeing the lump of blankets. Finally, from inside the lump pops out a male head. A young man about 20 – 21 looks out and squints like what little light does shine is hurting his eyes. He’s pale and shivering (it was -1c/34F) outside that morning.
I finally get a disjointed tale from Justin (that’s what he says his name is). He tells me that he lives in a trailer further down from us with his mother and his mother’s boyfriend. He said that the boyfriend had been drinking and his mother and boyfriend had been fighting. He tells me that the boyfriend started hitting his mother, so he got in between them and told the boyfriend they should go for a ride to calm down. They went for a ride in the boyfriend’s truck and went several miles when they got into a fight and the boyfriend hit the kid and threw him out of the truck and took off.
He says he walked many miles in only his underwear and t-shirt and fell down a ravine. He was freezing and started pounding on doors and of course, the husband let him in. Allll righty then.
Now me. I’m not a trusting person. I’m the complete opposite of the husband. I listened to this disjointed story with doubt. Lots and lots of doubt. My instincts were telling me the boy was lying. Will I ever know the truth? Probably not, but I still think the kid was lying. You’ll see why…….
After telling me this story and moaning a bit, he asked if he could lay down on our couch and try to warm up. I tell him sure. In the meantime I look for any kind of weapon in case I have to use it. Like I said, not a trusting person. He lays down on the couch and I notice he does only have on a pair of sleeping shorts and a light t-shirt. I look at his feet in what light we have, they are clean with not a scratch on them. Nor his legs.
After this Sam needed to go outside, so I start to take him. The kid tells me, “please don’t go outside.” I open the door and tell him the dog  has to go out and it’s something that I’m going to do. He shut up. I get a better look at the kid when I come back as he’s talking to the husband. He’s got short black hair and blue eyes. He is also strongly built. He could hurt us easily if he wanted to. So I’m cautious. He was a bit pale and his eyes were……well, they had that look that people get when they are drunk or on drugs. I figure drugs. Oh goody. He wasn’t slurring his words, but what he was saying wasn’t making much sense.
First he says he wants to borrow the phone and call his grandma. Ok, he calls and hangs up. Says grandma will be here in about an hour and a half as she lives in another town. Fine. He lays back down on the couch, covers his body, including his head with the blankets and goes to sleep. Passes out? I don’t know. He’s out of it. So I get dressed. The husband and I sit for almost three hours until the kid decided to wake up. By now it’s 8 am. Now I’m pretty convinced he lied.
He calls a friend. Never mentions grandma again. Says the friend will pick him up after he takes his sister to school. Uh huh. Doesn’t sound like his friend is too concerned. Like he’s done this before? I dunno. He goes to the bathroom. I look him over. No scratches or even dirt on his feet or legs. His arms have a few scratches on them, so does his head. I notice his hands are scraped up. Not like he fell down though. Like he grabbed something and it was tore out of his hands. Something is not adding up. A lot of somethings were not adding up.
He looks at me and asks me if I drive. I ask why? He says, could I drive him to the apartments about 2 miles from here. His friends live there. He never mentions about going back to his mom’s. Never even mentions his mom again. No mom, no grandma, no boyfriend of his mom. Weird. My gut says do NOT take him by yourself. So I tell him the husband and I both will go and I will drive him to his friends. He agrees. What else is he going to do? I just want him gone.
He wraps himself up in our blanket and says he will come back and return the blanket. I tell him just keep it. It’s an old blanket. He says ok. I do NOT want him back. So we take him to the apartments and say good-by and we get back home. I tell the husband …… Don’t EVER let someone in at 5am. Call the police, they will straighten it out.
It was a weird thing. It really was. I am convinced he lied. I don’t think his mom was beaten up, I think maybe he got in a fight with mom himself, maybe because he was using drugs. She kicked him out. He passed out outside….she wouldn’t let him back in…..he came knocking on our door because no one else would answer their door. He did let slip that he tried other places.
None of it made any sense. Once he slept things off, I think he forgot what he told us. I just hope I don’t ever see him again.
So how are things with you guys?
The Haunting of Home
Halloween is coming soon, so I thought I would repost one of my favorite TRUE stories today. Enjoy!
Life, Love & Strength
I’ve told all of you about my ghost friend Abe. I know many of you probably don’t believe in ghosts, hauntings, things that go bump in the night. I do, because I’ve seen and heard things that are not explained otherwise. I’ve seen way too many ghosts for anyone to tell me they don’t exist. Just because a person hasn’t seen a ghost, doesn’t win the argument that they are not real. I believe there are many things we do not see, but they still exist.
My childhood home My childhood home
This ghost that I’m going to tell you about was seen and felt in my childhood home along with Abe. It just wasn’t as nice as Abe. In fact, this ghost gave off a distinct aura of menace. It was quite scary, especially for a kid. As I stated in my story about Abe, there were 8 children that lived…
Monday Meeting ~~ On A Tuesday! ~~ September 29, 2015
I’m running late…late…late! So without further ado, let’s get this meeting started.
Monday Meeting
Good morning, afternoon, evening people. I do hope your week is going well. Mine as you can tell is going fast! As I am late with my Monday Meeting. I’ve been one busy lady lately. Busy with what you ask? Well, even if you didn’t ask, I’m going to tell you. Ha!
I told you last Monday that my mother (who lives in Wisconsin) made the request that she wanted a sweatshirt with the Canadian maple leaf and she wanted it to say Canada on it. Now that should have been an easy find, after all, I live in Canada! I’m close to the border, so we get a lot of Americans here, easy peasy, right? WRONG!
I ran all over town and do you think I could find a medium sweatshirt with ‘Canada’ on it with a maple leaf? Nope…not a one in sight. Now, my 86-year-old mother doesn’t need clothes. She is what I call a clothes hog. She lives alone in a three-bedroom house, all the bedrooms have closets…big closets. Do you want to guess what’s in those closets? Clothes, you answer rolling your eyes at my naivety. You would be right, of course, well not at my naivety, so keep those eyes steady will ya, but at the word ‘clothes’. They are full of clothes. My mother’s clothes. All the closets. Every. Single. One. Stuffed full.
They are so full that my mother culls them out a couple of times a year and gives what she doesn’t want anymore to her grandkids. And her granddaughters love wearing Grandma’s clothes! Now see, right there it tells you my mother has good taste in clothes. How many girls want to wear their grandmother’s clothes? Anyway, I digress.
Mom doesn’t ask much from me. Hardly anything in all the years I’ve been gone. So when she put in the request for a sweatshirt I was more than happy to take on the task. Foolish me. Let me give you a rundown on how my last five days has gone.
Day One…I talk to Mom on the phone, she puts in a request for a sweatshirt. No problem. Easy enough done. I talk to the husband and even he thinks it won’t be a big deal. We plan to go the next day. So I carry on with my innocent self, doing my edits on A Case of Deceit. Don’t even think about it much anymore.
Day Two…Still innocent and trusting I get up, have my cups of coffee and off the husband and I go for a little trip into town. First stop, Walmart….look in both women’s and men’s clothing. No Canada sweatshirt. Ok, no problem. We go to a place called ‘Hoodies’ who specialize in hoodies (duh!) T-shirts and sweats. I knew it would probably be expensive, but hey, Mom is worth it and she’s paying for it anyway. Oh yeah, they were expensive but….no ‘Canada’ sweatshirt. The lady sends us to the mall, maybe Sears has one. I hate the mall. Haven’t been to one in more than five years. Don’t want to go…..but….Mom……so I go. Hubby stays in the car, smart man. He can’t walk the mall anyway, too painful. So off I go…a little less innocent, but not jaded….yet.
I search Sears to no avail. I ask in the Women’s department. No Canada sweatshirt. They show me a few, but mom wouldn’t like them. More geared to the teenage crowd. Not for my elderly mother. So I decide to go into the dreaded mall. My eyes darting here and there like a frightened deer. It wasn’t very crowded being the middle of the week. Ok, I can handle this. I find a map of the place. Hm, lots of womenswear, but nothing I really want to venture into. Not even for Mom. Maybe they have a shop for things like I wanted. Hey, I don’t know. I don’t shop, much less shop at the mall. Plus, I’m getting tired.
I’m in the middle of the mall. I’m tired and thirsty and looking for my way out. The mall has kiosks set up throughout. I see one with a handsome young man manning it. He’s dressed like most young men, stylish yet comfortable. He’s in the mall every day, he must know what’s in it. Plus….did I tell you he was handsome? Oh yes, he was. Dark brown hair with eyes to match and a nicely trimmed beard. He also had a smile that lit up his face and eyes that twinkled. Or maybe he thought I was going to buy something. I didn’t care. I wanted to stop and say hi….so I did. Eh, hubby was in the parking lot. I was free….and easy apparently.
So I say ‘hi!’ and ask him if he knew of anyplace in town that sold sweatshirts that said ‘Canada’ on them. His brown eyes get serious and I can see he’s really giving it some deep thoughts. You would have thought I asked him about the world’s politics he gave it such serious thought. He was a nice young man being nice to an old lady that was harboring some nice thoughts of her own. Hey, I’m old, not dead. Anyway, he smiles his megawatt smile at me and says….’Try the Dollar Store! That’s where I go when I want something with ‘Canada’ on it!’
I thank him and tell him I would never have thought of that and take my leave. I find my way out of the hated mall and tell the husband to take me home. I’ve had enough for one day.
Day Three….I get on the internet and try to find the sweatshirt from hell. I find all sorts at Amazon.ca. Aha! If I can’t find one in town, I will just order her one from Amazon. That’s not cheating is it? No….well ok, maybe. I don’t have to tell Mom do I? I feel my aching legs from yesterday’s excursion and sigh. I do more edits on my story and try to forget about shopping for a while.
Day Four….My stepson tells the hubby (after hubby told him all about our shopping experience, minus the handsome young man, because, well I didn’t tell the husband about him) that he will take the husband to a store that he assures us will have the sweatshirt. Yay! One more day of no shopping for me! So I send the husband off with the son and wish them well (besides, lately the husband doesn’t want to do anything, so I take this as a good sign). I stay home and do housework and more edits. Hm, maybe I didn’t get the better end of the deal…..
The husband comes home empty-handed. No sweatshirt. Dammit. So we make plans to go to one more place the next day that I had thought about while he was gone. Yes, I had a revelation! If this place didn’t have what I wanted, Amazon was going to be visited by the bad daughter and an order would be put forth. Hell is where I was going……..sorry Mom.
Day Five….We get up, have my much-needed coffee and set forth on the quest of the damn sweatshirt. My revelation from the day before? The Tourist Information building! They have a gift store inside, they have got to have all sorts of things that say Canada on them! My legs still ache from day one, so I’m walking slower and going up steps are a bitch….but off we go. It’s on the other side of town. Of course it is. We’ve never been to it because we live here. So, no reason to go.
I grit my teeth and we finally find the place. I’m praying to the tourist gods that they have what I need. We walk inside and are greeted by the nice older man and my eye spots racks of…..shirts! T-shirts! Hoodies! Sweatshirts! They all say Canada on them! YES!!! Paydirt!! I make a beeline over to the racks and I can feel myself becoming something I never thought I would be in this lifetime…..a shopper! I’ve gone over to the Darkside…….
If my legs hadn’t hurt so much, I would have danced a jig….please, no pictures……
I find a couple of shirts I know my mom will like. One even has bling on it! She loves bling……It’s a black zippered sweater/sweatshirt with pink rhinestones that spell out ‘Canada’. Perfect! I also find a shirt that says ‘Lethbridge, Canada’ (where I live). So another score! It has a maple leaf on it too. The husband decides to buy my mother a maple syrup sucker in the shape of a….maple leaf! Hey, I add it to the shirts, she’ll get a kick out of it.
I pay for our purchases and walk out a daughter champion. Guess I’m not going to hell after all. At least not for ordering the shirts from Amazon. But…..maybe for the thoughts about the handsome young man………….ah……it would be worth it!
So hell will have to do without me for a while longer….How’s your week going?
