Merry Christmas From Me and The Fur Gang!

Merry Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, depending on which half of the world you are in. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.

Here in my world, it’s only Christmas Eve, but me and Sam and the two cats want to wish you the best holiday season!

Also, I want to say a big warm thank you to all of you who participated in The Great Christmas Card Exchange! It’s been so gratifying to see how many of you appreciate the real paper cards. I enjoyed it so much! There was only one mishap where a card was returned, but it will be straightened out after Christmas. So I call that a big WIN!

Here is a picture of my door of holiday cheer! Big Christmas hugs to all of you! I’ve had a big smile on my face for days now when I see all the outpouring of love and affection in each card I received. I do so hope you all felt the same when you got mine! Because it was in every word I wrote! Hope to see all of you and many more next year! May light and love be yours from my house to yours!

The Great Christmas Card Exchange Update and Some Other Cool Stuff

Hello People! Hope those that celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday had a great one! Now, it’s time for those leftovers. Personally, I love a good turkey sandwich. Any pie left? ūüėČ

Now, down to business.

Everyone still has a few days left to join me and many others in The Great Christmas Card Exchange. If you click on the Christmas card in my sidebar, it will take you to the post that explains it all and where you can email me your name and address.

In a nutshell; Last year me and a few other bloggers decided to exchange real paper Christmas cards. I enjoyed it so much I decided to do it again this year and all of you are invited! Please read the post where I explain it all and join us! It’s a cheap way to brighten someone’s Christmas this year. Plus, you get a Christmas card from your’s truly! ( I know not such a great incentive, but I try)

I will be sending out the lists for every participant (if you joined in the ‘group’ plan) this afternoon or tomorrow morning. So be on the lookout for an email from me soon!


Something else has happened that I would like to tell you about. Don’t worry, this is a good one! On Nov. 23rd, I did a post all about coffee. Now you all know how I love a good cup of coffee.

One of the things I mentioned was the most expensive coffee beans out there. Entrepreneur Blake Dinkin (a Canadian) is the founder and the brains behind Black Ivory Coffee, which can now boast about being the most expensive coffee beans produced. If you remember, the beans are fed to the elephants who then poop them out and the beans are picked out of the waste.

I had a ¬†pleasant surprise this morning when I heard from Mr. Dinkin himself on my blog post! He was very kind and explained some more about the bean process, well here, I’ll include his comment from the post.¬†(You can read it yourself right in the post and my reply if you wish)

Hi. Thanks for your comments on Black Ivory Coffee. I would like to clarify that my coffee is actually not similar to Kopi Luwak in terms of production quantity, choice of bean, biology of the animal or in terms of ethics.

If you believe the story (which you should not) that civets go out at night and eat only the best cherries they also happen to eat garbage or rotting insects. Further I highly doubt they travel hundreds of km’s annually visiting different coffee farms looking for the best Arabica beans.

Black Ivory Coffee production was 200 kg for 2014 making it one of the world’s rarest coffees. Kopi Luwak if it is real can be found on sites like for USD6/kg with quantities of 10,000 kg.

In terms of taste elephants are herbivores. Civets are omnivores. Herbivores utilize fermentation to break down the green leafy matter they consume. As a result the elephant’s stomach replicates what grapes go through in a vat to make wine. This does not happen to near the same degree with civets.

Finally, wild civets are taken from the wild and put into cages. This is unethical. The elephants I work with at GTAEF ( were rescued off the streets of Thailand and the sanctuary is a Thai registered charity with a full time elephant veterinarian.

I also checked out his website and it’s beautiful! It’s full of good information on the process and about the well-being of the rescued elephants. If I had the money and was able to I would buy me some of that coffee! It’s a good thing Mr. Dinkin is doing. It also is good business sense. So go take a look and if you are so inclined, drop him a note (under contact) and tell him thanks!

The Great Christmas Card Exchange

Hello People!

I hope today finds everyone well and that your weekend was worth it.

Did you notice my title? Wonder about it? Well, let me tell you my exciting news! And yes, I know it’s only the beginning of November. It’s just the right time to discuss “The Great Christmas Card Exchange”.

What is that Jackie, you ask? Great question!

Last year, a few blogging buddies and I were lamenting that we didn’t receive real paper Christmas cards in snail mail anymore. We might have received one or two a year. With the great technology, we ¬†have at our fingertips in today’s world, most Christmas cards get sent via email or even texting. What’s the fun in that we cried!

So we exchanged postal addresses and sent each other a real Christmas card. It was great! Some even sent small gifts and we all wrote small personal messages inside. Just like in the old days. It was so nice to receive these cards of love from my blogging friends and they felt the same.



I decided why not start a little earlier (we decided to do this in December of last year), and get many more bloggers involved? Who doesn’t love to see ¬†mail addressed to them from a friend? Let’s bring back a really nice old-fashioned tradition.

I want to receive Christmas cards from all my blogging friends! Yes, I know I’m greedy. I want to see how many I can get, how many I can send out and from how many places in the world I can get them. So I have come up with 2 ways YOU can participate.

ONE ~~ You send me your address and I send you mine via email. The two of us exchange cards via snail mail.

TWO~~ If you want to participate in a group mail, let me know when you send me your address. All those who would like to join this group I will send 5 blogging buddy postal address’ (with their permission, of course!) It’s a great way to make new friends, receive Christmas cards from all over the world and spread the joy of Christmas to people who might really need it.

There are a lot of bloggers who will be spending time alone at Christmas, have little family, or like me, family doesn’t acknowledge them, who would greatly enjoy getting something in the mail for Christmas. Even a simple card can bring great joy. Your address’s¬†are safe with me, I promise!

Today is Christmas Card Day ~~ Have you sent yours?

Hello again people! I hope your day or night is going absolutely wonderful.

Here its cold, snowy and very windy. Old Man Winter is quite active this year, I do wish he would quiet down for a while. But enough about that old man, I’m here to bring you todays list of celebrations. How have you liked it so far? Interesting and sometimes funny, I say. I often wonder how some of these holidays started. Someone was bored one day?

Today is kind of a quiet day for celebrations, must be working up to the big one in a two and half weeks. Yikes! Let’s see what I’ve found for today.

Christmas Card Day ~~ (Via Wikipedia) The first¬†Christmas cards were commissioned by Sir¬†Henry Cole¬†and illustrated by¬†John Callcott Horsley¬†in London on the 1st of May 1843.¬†The central picture showed three generations of a family raising a toast to the card’s recipient: on either side were scenes of charity, with food and clothing being given to the poor.¬†¬†Allegedly the image of the family drinking wine together proved controversial, but the idea was shrewd: Cole had helped introduce the¬†Penny Post¬†three years earlier. Two batches totaling 2,050 cards were printed and sold that year for a¬†shilling¬†each.

Today is the day to celebrate Christmas cards and to get that list out and start addressing those envelopes. Go ahead and send out your Christmas cards folks.

Today sending Christmas Cards by snail mail seems to be another lost art. With ecards and technology a lot of people find it easier to just send cards through the internet. I think that loses so much of the holiday season. People need to slow down and savor things in life. So if any of you out there want a Christmas card by snail mail from chilly, beautiful Southern Alberta, just drop me an email and I’ll send you an old fashioned Christmas Card. I’m serious people.

National Pastry Day ~~ I don’t know who or why this holiday was created, but my guess would be because it’s close to Christmas. What better way to celebrate the season than by baking and eating a delicious pastry.

To make this a fun-filled occasion pastry chefs from all over the world put up their best creative culinary skills to create a signature pastry. Can you imagine all the smells and tastes? Oh wow, this is my kind of day!

According to Wikipedia pastry has been around for a very long time.

“The European tradition of pastry-making is often traced back to the short crust era of flaky doughs that were in use throughout the Mediterranean in ancient times.¬†In the ancient Mediterranean, the Romans, Greeks and Phoenicians all had filo-style pastries in their culinary traditions. There is also strong evidence that Egyptians produced pastry-like confections. They had professional bakers that surely had the skills to do so, and they also had needed materials like flour, oil, and honey.”

So go ahead and have a pastry to celebrate, but remember, moderation in all things is the key.

Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 9-15) ~~¬†Computer Science Education Week,¬†is an international event designated by the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize the transformative role of computing and the need to bolster computer science at all educational levels. This happening is¬†¬†held in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer¬†Admiral Grace Murray Hopper¬†(December 9, 1906). They have their own website and I’ve added a link, just click on the name.

Weary Willy Day ~~¬†Emmett “Weary Willie” Kelly was born on December 9, 1898. Ever since he was a little kid, he’d dreamed of joining the circus. In 1933, Emmett Kelly became the clown Weary Willie. He died of a heart attack in 1979, but he is remembered today on Weary Willie Day every year.¬†Weary Willie was a sad-face clown who carried around a sack-on-a-stick. (The character was inspired by hobos of the Depression era.) This clown would come out to sweep up the three rings after other circus acts, and he would try unsuccessfully to sweep up the pool of light of a spotlight. To honor his memory and his talent, go make someone smile, put on some really big pants, paint your clown face up, but mostly enjoy life, no matter how hard it gets sometimes.

National Egg Nog Month ~~ I think we can all figure out why this month is National Egg Nog month. What other month is Egg Nog consumed in such big quantities? I never developed a taste for it myself. Also I’m allergic to milk, so I opt out of drinking it.

Eggnog, or egg nog, is a sweetened dairy-based beverage traditionally made with milk and/or cream, sugar, and whipped eggs (which gives it a frothy texture). Brandy, rum, whisky, bourbon, vodka, or a combination of liquors is often added. The finished serving is often garnished with a sprinkling of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin spice.

The origins¬†and the ingredients used to make the original eggnog drink are debated. Eggnog may have originated in¬†East Anglia,¬†England; or it may have simply developed from¬†posset, a¬†medieval¬†European¬†beverage made with hot milk. ¬†The “nog” part of its name may stem from the word¬†noggin, a¬†Middle English¬†term for a small, carved wooden mug used to serve alcohol.¬†However, the British drink was also called an¬†Egg Flip¬†(from the practice of “flipping” (rapidly pouring) the mixture between two pitchers to mix it).¬†Another story is that the term derived from¬†egg and¬†grog, a common¬†Colonial¬†term used for the drink made with¬†rum. Eventually, that term was shortened to¬†egg’n’grog, then¬†eggnog.

Whatever the history lots of people drink it during the holiday season, it’s traditional.



Lager Beer Week (Dec 9-15) ~~ Yup, all you lager beer lovers will be happy to know this week is Lager Beer Week. Now I have to admit, I don’t drink beer of any kind. Gasp! Yes I know its a terrible admission. I just could never handle the taste of beer, but since becoming a diabetic it’s a moot point as I shouldn’t drink anyway.

(Via Wikipedia) Lager¬†(German:¬†storage) is a type of¬†beer¬†that is fermented and conditioned at low temperatures.¬†Pale lager¬†is the most widely consumed and commercially available style of beer in the world.¬†Bock,¬†Pilsner¬†and¬†M√§rzen¬†are all styles of lager. There are also dark lagers, such as¬†Dunkel¬†and Schwarzbier. The term¬†Lager¬†is a cognate of¬†ligrs, Gothic for “place of lying (down)”.

Lift a mug full of Lager beer in celebration this week and party on!
