63 Things I’ve Learned in 63 Years

Hello everyone! Yes, I know it’s been a very long time since I posted anything. Since early March, actually. Why? Because life sometimes has a way of making me so tired. Things have straightened out a bit since then. I’m at a new ‘normal’ around here.

Quick catch up, then I’ll get to this new post. Most of you will remember the health problems of the husband in the past few years. First colon cancer, got that beat as he is now officially three years cancer free! Then he had a stroke in late October of last year. He’s still getting over that one. There have been a few stays in the hospital for pneumonia here and there but he seems to be stable now. Thank goodness. Time to breath!

Life can be hard but I keep plodding along. As for me, I’ve had a terrible bout of insomnia since May. So yeah, I get kind of tired.

I’m back now. I do hope to stick around too. I don’t know how often I will post, I’m going to try for once a week and go from there. As to what I will post? Who the hell knows. We’ll see what happens.

Now, the reason for this post. Today is my birthday! Yeah, ok, keep the cheering down. I’m sixty-three today. Shit, that seems like such a big number! I hope to see sixty-four. My body feels like it’s ninety-three while my mind feels twenty-three yet. I’m young at heart people with an old woman’s outlook. Ha!

Anyway, my friend Mer had her 44th birthday last month and she came up with a post with 44 things she learned in her 44 years. So, thanks Mer, I’m stealing your idea!

Let’s get this party started!

63 Things I’ve Learned in 63 Years

  1. No matter how broke you are….treat yourself sometimes
  2. Age is a state of mind, not a number
  3. A pet can save your sanity
  4. Never just settle for a life partner, you won’t be happy and neither will they
  5. Accept yourself….no other opinion means more
  6. Drink lots of water
  7. Life is going to throw you some curve balls….Learn to go with it, it all works out in the end
  8. Getting hurt is part of life
  9. Don’t trust someone your dog doesn’t like!
  10. Life is damn short—-Live it!
  11. Don’t hold grudges
  12. If you have a life partner always have some of your own money tucked away, have your own bank account
  13. If there is something you’ve always wanted to do….Do it! (Unless it hurts you or someone else)
  14. Don’t be afraid to have your own ideas or beliefs, you don’t need to be the same as everyone else
  15. Don’t be afraid of growing older, some of it sucks but some of its great.
  16. It’s necessary for your wellbeing to say NO sometimes
  17. Trust your gut instinct
  18. Don’t do something or be someone to just please the family. They don’t live your life. You do!
  19. If someone lies to you…..they will keep lying to you
  20. Don’t be peer pressured or family pressured into having kids. If you don’t want them, don’t have them. The world will do just fine.
  21. Once a cheater, always a cheater. Same goes for a spouse abuser. They won’t change no matter how much you think they will.
  22. Act silly sometimes
  23. You can’t herd cats very well
  24. Always carry extra undies in your purse when traveling. (sorry guys, don’t know what you would do) That way when your luggage is lost you have clean undies for the next day. No one wants to put on the same undies two days in a row.
  25. Also, when traveling keep extra cash on your person.
  26. If you’re on a diet, don’t burn vanilla scented candles
  27. Coffee is the worlds apology for making you get out of bed
  28. Whoever decided grocery shopping online and delivery service was a good thing should be given an award! I love it!
  29. Music really does soothe the soul
  30. Be impulsive sometimes, it can lead to wonderful things
  31. Tell the people who you love that you do love them. It might be the last chance you get
  32. You don’t need a lot of friends
  33. What friends you do have, let them know you appreciate them
  34. Always use a grammar and spell check when writing…..saves some embarrassment
  35. Read different things, even if you don’t think you will like the genre, sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised
  36. Keep a positive attitude, it will bring about positive things in your life
  37. You don’t need to be religious to be a good person
  38. Swearing is not unladylike
  39. Sometimes have a resting bitch face saves you from having to actually BE a bitch
  40. There is nothing wrong with eating your favorite comfort food sometimes
  41. I love my attitude
  42. No matter how much advice you can give a person, they will only take what they think they need and not what they actually need
  43. People usually don’t want that advice anyway, they just want to vent
  44. I’ve learned that being unhappy with my life at times was my own fault and only I could change it
  45. I’m fascinated by dragonflies
  46. I still believe in that Christmas magic can happen
  47. I have a young child’s awe of Mother Nature
  48. I’ve learned that being the ‘quiet one’ is not a personality flaw
  49. I’ve come to accept that I will never be thin and that’s ok with me
  50. I know now that my happiness lies in me, not someone or something else
  51. Making a list this long is damn hard!
  52. I love challenging my mind. I think that’s what keeps me young
  53. I prefer silence over noise or talking
  54. You can learn a lot about someone just by observing them
  55. I don’t forgive easily
  56. I never forget either
  57. People are generally nice given a chance
  58. There are always exceptions to the rule
  59. I still prefer animals over people
  60. Trying to win approval from my mother was a lifelong difficulty and never truly achieved
  61. I’m hard to love but worth the effort
  62. If you were looking for deep, inspirational things from me you probably didn’t get it ….hahahaha
  63. Maybe next year I will be wiser….I’ll be older, so there is that small chance

Don’t count on it!

Wednesday Whatever! (This post will contain TMI on me, so be warned)

Hello, People! I’m trying to get my life back to normal again. Well, as normal as I’ll ever be, which seems to change with the wind. So it is, so it will ever be.

Today’s post is going to be a TMI post but in a fun way (I hope). My friend (who goes by many names) did a post called ‘The Slightly TMI List of Questions‘. She’s a funny lady and I love her muchly so I thought I would steal the post from her and do my own.

Wednesday

Are you ready? And off we go………..

1 – Boxer shorts or budgy smugglers?

I would have to say boxer shorts. I like using my imagination…….

2 – What color of underwear are you currently wearing?

I’m old….so white it is. Yeah, boring right?

3 – How long have you been wearing them for?

I could lie and say for a week and gross you all out….but I won’t. ha! Since I got dressed, about an hour ago.

4 – Do you ever use binoculars to watch people?

I don’t own any binoculars (note to self…get a pair of binoculars). If I DID own a pair I don’t think I would watch people with them. I prefer nature. You know, birds and animals and such. People I watch anyway, just with my regular old eyes. People are such strange creatures……

5 – Have you ever kicked someone in the groin?

Yes, I have. It was kind of accidently on purpose.

6 – Would you pull a trigger?

Yes, and I have a few times. At targets. Now if you had asked ‘would you pull a trigger at somebody’ the answer would be the same. Yes. I have a couple of times. Don’t worry, I never hit them. Just needed to scare them a bit. Which I did. If I wouldn’t have, I would in all probability not be here today so my conscious is clear.

7 – If you met your favorite celebrity, and they wanted to make out with you, would you?

I’m not even sure if I have a favorite celebrity. So it’s a maybe. Eh, who knows.

8 – Have you ever slept in the same bed with someone you were not in a relationship with (not talking about sex and one-night-stands)?

Sure, lots of times. Haven’t most of us?

9 – Have you had one-night-stands?

Yes, I have. Hey, you don’t get to be this age and not experiment or have a life, right? Right!

10 – Does sex have the same importance to you now compared to when you were younger?

Short answer….no. I’m at that age where I know sex isn’t that important anymore. Companionship, friendship, and communication have become more important. You’ll get there one day, my friends. Wait and see.

11 – Have you ever eaten a worm?

Not that I know of. But saying that, I cannot say for sure, as I used to drink Tequila. 😉 Who knows if I did or didn’t while doing so.

12 – What’s the grossest thing you’ve ever eaten?

Liver! That is the nastiest thing. Ugh. Now I’ve eaten grasshoppers, bees, ants, snake and assorted other creatures, but liver of any kind is just nasty.

13 – How long do you spend sitting on the toilet?

Have I mentioned that I’m old? So I have spent way too much time on the toilet than I should have to.

14 – What do you do when you sit there (besides the obvious)?

I don’t read, text or anything like that. I sometimes come up with story lines, though. Well, I did warn you guys that there will be TMI. ha!

15 – Have you ever been peed at?

Anyone who has ever changed a diaper of a little boy has been peed at. I don’t have kids but I’ve babysat them. I’ve also been peed at by dogs when they get too excited. So yeah, I have.

16 – What’s the grossest thing you have ever swallowed?

Oysters. I swear it’s like swollowing snot. Ugh. Or liver….again.

17 – What’s the constantly dirtiest place in your home?

My friend said cat box and I have to agree with her. I have two huge cats. So yeah, I would say the cat box.

18 – Why don’t you clean it?

Why don’t you clean it! Sorry…..got a bit defensive there….. um, I DO clean it. Every day. They like to come in right after I’m done and do their thing. Sigh…..it’s never ending because they are cats.

19 – Do you eat your boogers?

Really? You had to go there? I don’t eat them. Eck. I knew a kid in school who used to. He would sit in class all day and munch down. He didn’t have any friends. Kids are like that.

20 – Can you describe the one smell that makes you gag?

I have a very strong stomach. It would take something major to make me gag. I’m sitting here thinking, give me a minute……. Ok, all I get is rubbing alcohol. It doesn’t really make me gag, it’s more like a rolling of the stomach and a faint feeling. Yeah, I’m weird.

21 – Have you ever had head lice?

No. Even in school. Most of the kids would get them but I never did. Believe me, my mom checked.

22 – Have you ever been utterly disappointed in someone?

Yes, too often.

23 – Have you ever been scared of someone?

Yes, I have. When you look in the eyes of stone cold killer, you tend to get scared.

24 – What do you do when you’re drunk that you wouldn’t want anyone to know about?

I had to really go back a ways on this one. Way back. I came up with…nothing. Even when I was young, I never got that drunk that I didn’t know what I was doing. I might not have cared if I did it, but I never did anything I was ashamed about. I like being in control.

25 – Have you tried pole dancing?

No. If I was younger and more in shape I might as I’ve heard it’s good exercise. Plus have you ever seen what those people can do on one of those poles? They are fantastic!

26 – Have you been in a strip club?

Yes and I have never seen the fascination with them.

27 – Have you ever run over an animal?

Yeah, I did once. Even though it was a skunk I felt terrible for days.

28 – Have you ever peed in snow?

I don’t remember ever doing so. So I’m going with no.

29 – Have you ever made fun of someone and then regretted it?

Once. I did that in grade school. Felt bad about it and tried not to do it again. Unfortunately, I probably did do it again. Sigh, I’m bad.

30 – What’s your favorite kind of question on Cards for Humanity (if you know the game)?

Never played the game.

31 – If the father of your best friend hit on you, what would you say to him?

I don’t believe the father of my best friend is alive anymore. Well, I know one isn’t. The other best friend is almost my age and her father is very old. Doubt it would happen.

32 – Would you go out on a date with someone half your age or double your age?

I had to laugh at this one. Half my age? If I wasn’t married. Maybe. haha! Double my age? Not unless I’m into dating dead guys. As believe me they would be way dead!

33 – Do you clean the sink after brushing your teeth?

I don’t clean it no. I do however rinse it out….because ewwwwww.

34 – Have you ever spat in someone’s food or drink?

Ugh, no!

35 – Have you ever kissed someone only to be grossed out afterwards?

Oh gods, yeah I have. Like my friend’s answer, my ex used to do snuff. Now that is some nasty crap. Also, I never liked beer, so any guy that was drinking beer. Ugh.

36 – What is your number one goal in life, and are you living it?

Well, right now, my number one goal in life is to live, so yeah, I’m living it. hahahaha

37 – Do you spy on your neighbor(s)? If yes, why?

I wouldn’t call it spying. More like an interested bystander. Yeah, that’s so much classier than ‘spy’. Why? Because people are weird.

38 – Have you ever danced and/or cried in the rain?

Yes to both. I’ve cried in the rain when my heart was broken and it just happened to be raining and I was outside. I danced in the rain because I could.

39 – Have you ever ditched work to just chill out on your own (with or without Netflix)?

Yes, because I am an introvert and I need to recharge. When I used to work outside the home I would take a day here and there and just enjoy the silence and be at peace for a little while.

40 – What do you wish you were doing right now (uncensored)?

Right now? I wish I was talking to mom on the phone and telling her I love her. Since I will never be able to do that again, I wish I was in the forest taking a long walk with nature and enjoying the sounds of it, the smell of it, the peacefulness of it.

Or I was sitting watching and listening to a violent thunderstorm.

There you have it folks. If you want to do this let me know and link up! If not, I understand. Love you guys.

Wednesday Whatever!

My friend Mer over at Knocked over by a feather did this 50 list post where she posted 50 little things about herself most people wouldn’t know. I told her I was going to steal the idea. So here I am….stealing. 😉

I’m not sure what I could possibly tell you that might be interesting or that you might want to know. ha! Goodness, most of you that have been here for a while know a lot about me already but I will try to come up with something new.

  1. I never drank coffee until I was in my late twenties. I loved the smell of brewing coffee back then but hated the taste.
  2. I started smoking cigarettes at the age of nine. Stopped on and off throughout the years, finally quit for good in 2007.
  3. I’m allergic to spider webs. Not the spiders themselves. To their webs. They secrete a protein when they make their webs and that’s what I’m allergic to. I get red itchy welts wherever my flesh has touched one.
  4. I almost got fired from my first job because I refused to give to the Salvation Army. I had read an article back then that stated the donations we gave mostly went to pay salaries of their Board of Directors than to actually helping people. So on principle, I refused to give. My supervisor tried to blackmail me into giving as I was the only one in my department that didn’t give. I dared them to fire me. They didn’t.
  5. I kissed a girl. I was young and wanted to know what it was like.
  6. I use sarcasm as a shield so no one knows how shy I really am.
  7. I don’t wear jewelry. Ever.
  8. I’ve never been baptised. My parents didn’t believe in teaching us kids any one particular religion. They told us to explore. So I did. I have been to lots of different churches. Even Jehovah Witness’. I have come to my own way of believing which leans more toward Wicca and Native American.
  9. I once lived with my ex, his girlfriend, and her daughter because I had nowhere else to live. It only lasted a couple of months before they moved out while I was at work. With all my stuff. Except my clothes, bed, one chair and a tv tray.
  10. My favorite vegetable is asparagus. (Mer and I have great taste!)
  11. The vegetable I hate is peas. With lima beans right there with it.
  12. I’m allergic to beets.
  13. I went through menopause in my early 30’s and would lose my temper so badly that all I could see literally was red. It scared me, then depressed me.
  14. I had an affair with a married man.
  15. I had nightmares for a month after seeing the movie ‘The Exorcist’.  Yes, I read the book too. To this day, I don’t watch horror movies. Or read horror books.
  16. I have never broken a bone.
  17. When I was a teenager I developed ulcers because of my mom. We had a tumultuous relationship.
  18. I love lemons.
  19. I taught myself to type. I now type over 60 wpm.
  20. I hate talking on the telephone and will avoid it whenever possible.
  21. My two best friends are ladies I have never met in person but I know I could tell them anything without them judging me. I trust them.
  22. I never wanted kids.
  23. I never wanted to get married.
  24. Both marriages came about because I was ‘pushed’ into them. Otherwise, I would  have been quite content just living with them without the paperwork.
  25. I have never been on a motorcycle.
  26. I am the only one in my immediate family who has attended a college.
  27. I taught myself to paint.
  28. I used to sell my hand painted items in the Dallas Market Center.
  29. I never tried pot until I was in my late 40’s. Didn’t try it again.
  30. I’m scared of the dark
  31. I haven’t had my hair cut since 2006.
  32. I used to faint at the sight of needles. Now I’m a diabetic. Karma sucks sometimes.
  33. I am a food addict.
  34. I have never seen a Stars Wars film
  35. I have never read a Harry Potter book
  36. I don’t like chick films
  37. I always wished I looked more like my Native American mother than my German father
  38. I still resent my family for not telling me my dad died until months after, nor letting me say good-bye
  39. I love Mexican food and wish someone would smuggle some to me.
  40. I never wear long sleeve shirts
  41. I hate sweaters
  42. I always wanted to own a mastiff dog
  43. or a pet dragon
  44. I lost all my body hair (except on my head and face) more than 20 years ago
  45. I haven’t shaved my legs or armpits since because of it, I haven’t had to as no hair grows there
  46. I’m not afraid of dying, I’m afraid of HOW I will die
  47. Nothing shocks me anymore, lived too much, seen too much
  48. I have never had a birthday party and I’m going to be 61
  49. I don’t mind getting older anymore (I used to!) because now I can say whatever I want and get away with it.
  50. Someone sent me my ex’s Facebook page last week…..yup, I looked

Whew!!
Whew!!

Some of this might come as a surprise. I hope I have given you some new stuff about me that you didn’t know before. For some of you new people it gives you a chance to know me more than you probably wish. ha!

Maybe some of you feel inspired to do a list of your own. Let me know if you do!

Thanks Mer for the idea! ❤
