Another Truth or Fiction

Hello readers. So last weeks story was all about love and flirting. I should have had that story this week for Valentine’s Day. Ah well, I don’t celebrate this particular day anyway.

It seems I had everyone but Bill fooled with this one. It was FALSE. Yup, just a figment of my imagination. Thanks to all who answered with a guess and all who visited to just read the story. All is appreciated.

Let’s move on to today’s story. Like always, you tell me if you think it’s truth or fiction.

Evil in the Water

Her thin pale body seemed even paler against the blue of the lake’s water. Her body floated and bobbed with each small wave. A tiny bit of humanity set against the vastness of the great lake. In the distance, she heard the grown-ups laughing and talking. It was faint with a few louder belly laughs intruding on her peace. She knew it was her uncle Ron as he was always the jolliest at these family get-togethers and she could always count on hearing his loud laughter.

Several times during summer the family would come together at the lake with a cook-out, tended by the beer drinking grown-ups with the various siblings and cousins splashing around in the lake, not far from the keen-eyed Aunts and Uncles. There would be the inevitable squabble amongst both children and adults. The family was large and loud and she hated these times of supposed camaraderie amongst them all.

She preferred solitude. Even at the tender age of eight, she would much rather be in her bedroom at home with a good book. She was a quiet and unassuming child who tried not to draw attention to herself.

Her bluish-grey eyes opened slightly to see how far she had drifted from the others. Her white blond hair fanned out in the water like a small halo. She gave a rare smile to see that she was far enough away from the others to enjoy her peace yet close enough that her father could still keep an eye on her without yelling for her to come closer. Perfect.

Closing her eyes against the glare of the midday sun she drifted a bit further and let the quiet surround her. As she daydreamed about the latest Nancy Drew novel she wasn’t aware of the danger that drew closer to her. Until it was too late.

Seconds before she was pulled under the water she felt something or someone grab her right ankle. She was pulled under so fast she didn’t have time to scream much less take a deep breath. She tried desperately to shake the hand off her ankle but it was relentless. Terrified she opened her eyes and her heart stopped for a second as she recognized the face with the evil grin as her nemesis, her tormentor, her abuser for most of her short life. The dark water distorted his face and made it even more terrifying to the small child.

If she didn’t kick free she would drown. She knew that was his intention, she knew it in her heart as her lungs screamed for air and her soul screamed for help.

Finally, with one last pull down he let go of her. Her thin arms and legs kicked at the water to reach the top. Gasping for precious air she felt another hand grab her arm to keep her from sinking once more into the cold water. Fighting against the hand whom she thought belonged to her enemy, her ears heard her older brother yelling at her to stop fighting him. She opened her eyes to see the annoyance in her brother and relaxed. That’s why her abuser let her go because he had seen the shadow of her brother above them.

Giving her a small shake her brother told her Dad wanted her to come out of the water and eat. She was never so glad to leave the water behind as instead of the peacefulness she felt earlier it just held terror for her now.

The rest of the day she refused to go back into the water and sat with the adults until it was time to leave for home. It took many years for that little girl to love the water again but she knew if she didn’t overcome her fear, her abuser would win in the end. That would never happen. Never.

Ok, everyone. Is this one truth or fiction? Do you love water and swimming? Let me know!

Truth or Fiction

Welcome, everyone! Last week’s story seemed to be a mind game as only one person guessed right. It was FICTION. Yeah, I wish it had been true. I’ve always wanted to stay in a big fancy haunted house but I haven’t. One person, Bill, did pick up that the main character grew up in a place that was haunted, just as I did. So good on you, Bill! Unfortunately, that was the only truth in the whole story and really, I didn’t put it there intentionally. Just seemed a good addition to the story.

Now let’s get going on the next edition of Truth or Fiction. Is it true or a figment of my imagination?

Giving a Helping Hand

Her dog Molly kept pacing the living room and whining. She shushed her once but the pacing just got more frantic. What on earth was wrong with the dog? Molly was usually such a good companion and would lay quietly at her feet but not today. She’d never get those columns of numbers added right with Molly distracting her.

“What is it, Molly? What’s wrong?”

Molly faced the front door and whined. Maybe she needed to go out? Sighing heavily, she pushed herself out of her chair and opened the front door. The sunshine blinded her for a minute and the heat of the afternoon surrounded her, making her instantly regret leaving the air conditioning behind as the door closed behind her.

She hoped Molly wouldn’t take too long to finish her personal business as she needed to get those numbers added and the account books finished for her favorite client. Accounting paid the bills and playing with numbers was always fun.

She smiled as she looked around for Molly. The countryside was brown and dry but the trees still showed a bit of green. This summer had been unduly hot and dry and the usual beauty of the surrounding fields and trees were dulled with brown grasses slowly dying of thirst. She moved to the country after her divorce. It was just her and Molly, her German Shepherd and constant companion. She enjoyed the quiet of the country after the heartbreak she endured in the city last year. Here, she was able to heal and even grow happy again. Just her and Molly.

Thinking of Molly…where was she? Looking around her ears finally picked up the sound of a cow lowing. She knew a ranch owned the fields next to her and they ran cows on them. She had to teach Molly not to be afraid of the cows when she first moved here. Now Molly usually ignored them. They weren’t fun to play with. As she scanned the field for Molly the mooing of the cow seemed more frantic. Almost painful.

Under a large tree, she spotted Molly, once again frantically pacing back and forth in front of a large mound. No, wait, it wasn’t just a mound it was a heifer. She was laying down and making those awful, pain filled mooing sounds. She called for Molly but the dog refused to leave the cow’s side. Something must be wrong, she thought. Molly was acting frantic and the sounds coming from the cow were almost sounding like screams.

Scrabbling over the wooden fence dividing her front yard from the field she ran to where Molly and cow were. What she saw made her suck in her breath and widen her eyes. The cow was laying on her side, her belly swollen huge with pregnancy. She could see the distress in the cows’ eyes as she once again let out that distressing moo/scream. Even to her untrained eye, she could see the heifer was trying to deliver her calf but something was wrong.

She needed to call someone. Who? She couldn’t just leave the poor suffering animal to die. Something was wrong with the birth and she needed help desperately. When the cow gave another loud moo and turned her head to look at her, she could see the pleading in its eyes. She needed to do something fast. The cow didn’t have time to wait for someone. She needed help now!

“Think girl, think! What should I do?”

Then she remembered an article she read a long time ago. When she was much younger she thought about becoming a vet and so she read anything she could on animal care and what should be done if a dog was having a breech birth. She was certain this is what was happening to the cow. The calf needed to be turned so it could come out the right way.

She thought, “Well, a birth is a birth, it can’t be that different from a dog could it?”

Racing back to the house she wondered what she could use as a lubricant. She needed to stick her hand inside the cow and turn the calf. It wasn’t going to be easy but she had to try. Coming to stop inside the kitchen she frantically looked around. Butter? She didn’t have enough. Her eye fell on the brand new bottle of dishwashing liquid. That would make her hand slippery! She grabbed the bottle and a spare bath towel she had left over the kitchen chair earlier that day and sped back to the cow and Molly.

Molly hadn’t left the cow’s side. It was as if she knew what was going on and knew the cow needed her. Molly laid next to the cow and whined comfort to it.

“Good girl Molly. You keep comforting her while I see what I can do on this end.”

Taking a deep breath she quickly opened the bottle of dishwashing soap and spread a thick layer over her arms and hands. She tried to ignore the large strong hoofs and the sticky puddle of blood as she slowly shoved one hand into the cow. She could feel the calf and yes she had guessed right. It was a breech birth. The calf needed to be turned. It should come out head and front feet first and this one was turned just enough it wasn’t coming out that way.

She was going to need both hands to turn the calf. She wasn’t strong enough one-armed to do it. The cow seemed to know she was trying to help as the mooing stopped and the cow lay still, only once lifting her head to look at her. As if saying, “You can do this.”

Slipping her other arm inside she managed to find the front legs and grasp them. She didn’t need to move them far just a few inches to the side to line them up to the opening so hopefully, the mother had enough energy to push it out.

She felt the head and the front legs and gave a tug on the legs. At first, she didn’t think it was going to work, but then with one great effort, the mother cow pushed while she tugged and suddenly she had a newborn calf in her lap. She took the bath towel and wiped the gunk from the calf’s eyes, nostrils and mouth so it could breathe. Normally, the mother did this but this mother was too tired and so appreciated the help.

She didn’t know she was crying until Molly came over and first licked her tears then started to lick the calf. Those had to have been the most intense, emotional minutes of her life. She dragged the calf who was laying on the towel over to the mother’s head to show her that her baby was alive and well. The mom started licking it and making snuffling sounds.

“Come on Molly. We still need to call the rancher and let him know what happened so he can check up on mother and baby. Plus I need a shower.”

Later that day the rancher stopped by to thank her for helping the cow and to let her know that both were healthy and fit.

“Well, Molly. A good deed was done today. Let’s just hope there will be no repeat!”

Ok, folks. Was this based on truth? Or was it a complete piece of fiction? What would you have done if you came across an animal in need like in the story?

Share Your World ~~~ Oct. 2, 2017

Hello, everyone! First, let me give you a quick update on our snow. We got lots! Here’s a pic of what I woke up to this morning after it snowed all day and most the night.

I’m not shoveling either! Mother Nature put it there she can take it away. It might take a while as even though the sun is shining and we have bright blue skies today it’s only -3c or 27F. I’m patient….I’ll wait.

Now on to Cee’s Share Your World!

If you were given the opportunity to ride in a helicopter would go?

Oh yes, I would! I have always wanted to take a ride in a helicopter. Looks like great fun!

What are some of your favorite type of proteins to eat? (meat, seafood, eggs, soy, cheese, nuts)

I love cheese, nuts, seafood, chicken. I’m not much of a beef eater. I love eggs too but lately, they don’t love me. I have to watch my nut intake as it tends to raise my blood sugars. Moderation in all things.

What would be your preference, awake before dawn, at dawn, or awake before noon?

When I was younger I used to get up just before dawn to watch the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee. Now, eh, the dawn comes and goes and I’m still in bed. I don’t sleep well, haven’t for years so sometimes I don’t fall asleep until dawn. I am always up by 8:30 or 9 no matter what time I fell asleep.

So, there it is for this week. Hope everyone is having a good day.

Share Your World ~~~ Sept. 18 & 25, 2017

Hey, everyone! This week you get two weeks worth of Cee’s Share Your World in one! Aren’t you lucky duckies.

I had been having computer problems for a while when last week my computer decided to keep giving me the dreaded blue screen. I would be in the middle of something and POOF! Off it would go and up came the blue screen. Very frustrating. I finally had to break down and get a new one. Such an expensive pain but I can’t live without one….sooooooo……..I deal with it.

Needless to say, I missed doing SYW last week so I decided to combine this week and last weeks into one. Here goes……..

Complete this sentence: I want to learn more about …

Everything I’m interested in. Like, writing and painting. I would also love to learn more about my ancestors. My parents were not ones to talk about family. Most of them they ignored and feuded with. So, I don’t know a lot about the past or ancestors. Both my parents are gone now and even when I did ask my mothers questions she either would say she didn’t know or ignore the questions. I have no idea where to start but I’ve been thinking a lot about it lately.

On a vacation what you would require in any place that you sleep?

What is this ‘vacation’ you speak of? Well, when I used to have them or afford them and actually go somewhere I always needed a fan. I need that white noise and the air circulating to sleep. Although truth be told, I have never been able to sleep well in strange rooms or beds. I need my own.

What is your greatest extravagance?

I just bought it! Computers. I must have my computer and for me, in my money situation, it is an extravagance. So, I save, tighten the belt in other areas and buy it.

What is your favorite outdoor activity?

Going indoors. LOL I’m not much of an outdoor person anymore. I used to be when I was much younger. I would go camping and ride bikes and such. Haven’t done any of that in many years and don’t want to. I’m basically lazy. I don’t like bugs and am allergic to bees. I do sit outside when it’s nice with Sam (my dog) and watch the birds and the dragonflies. We had a robins nest in our front yard bush this summer. I would sit out and watch momma and daddy bird bring the three babies worms and bugs. I watched the babies first flight out of the nest too. I had to keep Sam from chasing the poor little things but it was exciting to watch.

In a car would you rather drive or be a passenger?

It depends. If I don’t like someone’s driving, I would rather drive. Even though I don’t do it a lot. I have no sense of direction. So if I don’t know exactly where I am going or haven’t been there a dozen times I get lost. It’s so embarrassing. I get lost so easily. I have even gotten lost going someplace I have been to lots of times, like the hospital. I still can’t drive there myself. I get lost. It’s bad folks.

If you could have three wishes granted for you alone, what would they be?

  • To have an endless supply of tax-free money so I wouldn’t have to worry about how to pay the bills and buy groceries for the month.
  • To have my health back.
  • To own a place where I could rescue lots of animals and take care of them.

I’m going to add a fourth wish here:

  • To be able to visit and help (if they needed it) all my online friends. I love you guys! ❤

How is your week going? Anything newsworthy? Let me know!

Share Your World ~~ Sept. 4, 2017

Hello, People! I hope that everyone that celebrated Labor Day had a good long weekend. Also, those of you that have kids going back to school today I wish you peace and quiet to relax in. 😉

Now let’s answer Cee’s Share Your World questions!

What color do you feel most comfortable wearing?

When I was younger I never wore anything but dark clothes. Blacks, grays, blues, you get the picture. Now and for the last several years I wear the rainbow! I love bright clothes now. Reds, purples, light blues, emerald-green, even orange. Seems the older I get the braver I become in colors. I want bright, cheery ones.

What is your favorite type of dog? (can be anything from a specific breed, a stuffed animal or character in a movie)

Any dog that is around me. I love all dogs. I used to raise German Shepherds years ago. Now I have Sam, who is a Shih Tzu/Bichon mix. I have had Dachshunds, Pekingese, and mixed breeds. I just love them all.

List at least five favorite flowers or plants.

  • Iris
  • Dill (love the smell)
  • Aloe Vera
  • Lemon Grass
  • Lilacs

What inspired you this past week?  Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

Reading all the uplifting stories of heroes of the Harvey storm. People truly are good. I cried about animals being rescued and laughed at the ‘angry cat’ picture. (I do hope that poor cat made it). I’m so glad there were so many unsung heroes rescuing animals and of course people.

Share Your World ~~~ May 29, 2017

Another week, another Share Your World post. Hey, at least I manage this one yet. I haven’t been posting much at all lately. Sorry about that. Yesterday I had a huge worry lifted off my shoulders so I’m hoping with that out of the way I can get back to some sort of writing schedule again. Cross your fingers.

Now on with this week’s questions and answers!

What is the most famous landmark or building you have ever seen?

Wow, I had to really think on this one. I’ve visited the Alamo. Various state capitals. That’s about it. When I travel or when I used to travel I didn’t want to spend it sightseeing. I spent it in the woods with nature. I haven’t seen a lot of famous landmarks or buildings. Eh, don’t think I’m missing much. Nature beats them every time.

Do you like long vacation or lots of mini-vacations?

I prefer mini-vacations. I always did. Not that I have had one in a very long time. Now, with the husband being in such bad shape we don’t go or do anything. Which is ok. I did a lot of traveling and moving when I was younger. I’m quite content to stay home now.

What is your favorite National or State Park?

When I was in my early 20’s I went camping in state parks all the time. Every vacation from work we would pack up her car, attach our bikes and off we would go for a couple of weeks exploring state parks in Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan. It was great fun back then. A different time.

All the state parks we visited were beautiful. I couldn’t really pick a favorite.

What is your fantasy vacation?

Spending time in the woods in a small cabin by a lake. Or, rent a treehouse and staying for about a week. Living in a tree. Wouldn’t that be something? I would love it! There are lots more around Canada and the US then I thought. I’m sure they are in other countries as well.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day!

My Incomplete List of Small Pleasures

Today I thought I would combine two things, My Incomplete List of Small Pleasures and Nerd in the Brains, Three Things Thursday. Nerdy does a post every Thursday about three things she is grateful for that week. It can be big or small things so I decided I was in a joining mood this morning and will join her on her journey into gratefulness and smiles. Because smiles are always fun to share.

Why not join us? And it doesn’t even have to be on a Thursday! It can be any day.

The Incomplete

Changing weather…..

I don’t know where you’re at but here you can feel the weather changing to Spring. I am so looking forward to Spring! We still have snow on the ground and it’s still cold but when the sun comes out it warms up pretty fast. There is a different feel to the air. It’s hard to explain but you just know Spring is coming. The sky looks different, the trees start to get a green glow and the earth (when you can see it beneath the snow) is beginning to look renewed. Plus, my body seems to know as it has a little more energy, a little more spring (hehe)  in the step. Ahhhh, Spring……hurry up!!!

Himalayan Salt Rock Lamps…..

What the hell is that you ask? Well, let me give you the description right off the website that I ordered it from…

lamp

. It is made of salt crystal that is ethically harvested from the geological range of the Himalayan Mountains, where salt deposits were formed millions of years ago. Due to its natural formation, each lamp is a uniquely beautiful combination of pink, orange, and white – no two are the same!

This lamp naturally produces negative ions, which help clean and purify the air. Ions are small electrically charged particles contained in the air we breathe. Other natural ion producers are trees and waterfalls. These lamps are helpful for people suffering from asthma and/or upper respiratory problems by reducing the amount of airborne bacteria and dust.

There you are. I bought it because I thought it was pretty and I figured anything that might help the husband and I breathe better can’t be bad. I’ve had it about two months now and I have to admit, my breathing (asthma) has been better. Whether it’s due to the lamp, I don’t know, but I’ll keep using it.

Online recipes……

Yes, I know. A strange thing to be grateful for but I am. I do all the cooking in the house. Every. Single. Day.

I tell you, I get so tired of trying to think of something different to make that the husband will eat. So when I want something just a little different, or I want something with the same old ingredients I have on hand but maybe add something to it to make it different, I go online. I love Google. I love online recipes. Like today….I am making chicken. Now, the husband is not too fond of chicken but we can’t have steak and potatoes every night. As much as he wishes we could.

So, I went online and found a great sounding recipe that I think even he will like since we both love mushrooms.

I had chicken, fresh mushrooms in the fridge so I Googled those ingredients and came away with a slow cooker recipe I’m doing for tonight.

Chicken breasts….fresh sliced mushrooms and cream of chicken soup.

That’s it! You put it all in the slow cooker, turn it on low and let it cook for 6 hours and you should have a delicious chicken in mushroom gravy. I plan on putting it over noodles. Or maybe potatoes….we’ll see. Yum!

Sometimes I need all the help I can get. 😉

So what are YOU grateful for today?

I’m Sore and Tired of Shoveling!!

Good day, People!

As you could probably tell by my title, I’ve been shoveling snow all weekend. Southern Alberta was hit with a snow storm this weekend. It snowed damn near for all of the last two days.

So yes, I’m sore and tired of shoveling this crap! So, I thought it would be a good day to re-post one of my funnier posts. It’s all about snow and shoveling and stuff……

Diary of a Snow Shoveler

December 8 – 6:00 PM

It started to snow.  The first snow of the season and  I took my cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print.  So romantic.  I love snow!

December 9

I woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape.  What a fantastic sight!  Can there be a more lovely place in the whole world?  Moving here was the best idea I’ve ever had!  Shoveled for the first time in years and felt young again.  I did both the driveway and the sidewalks.  This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again.  What a perfect life!

December 12

The sun has melted all our lovely snow.  Such a disappointment!  My neighbor tells me not to worry- we’ll definitely have a white Christmas.  No snow on Christmas would be awful!  Bob says we’ll have so much snow by the end of winter that I’ll never want to see snow again.  I don’t think that’s possible.  Bob is such a nice man, I’m glad he’s my neighbor.

December 14

Snow, lovely snow!  8 inches last night.  The temperature dropped to  -20 F.  The cold makes everything sparkle so.  The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks.  This is the life!  The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again.  I didn’t realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I’ll certainly get back in shape this way.  I wish l wouldn’t huff and puff so.

December 15

20 inches forecast.  Sold my van and bought a 4×4 Blazer and 2 extra shovels.  Stocked the freezer.  I thought about a wood stove in case the electricity goes out.  Then thought that’s silly.  We aren’t in Alaska, after all.

December 16

Ice storm this morning.  Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell.  The neighbor laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17

Still way below freezing.  Roads are too icy to go anywhere.

Electricity was off for 5 hours.  I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm.  Nothing to do but stare at the wall.  Guess I should’ve bought a wood stove.   I can’t believe I’m freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20

Electricity’s back on but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.  More shoveling!  Took all day.  The damn snowplow came by twice.  Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they’re too busy playing hockey.  I think they’re lying.  Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they’re out.  Might have another shipment in March.  I think they’re lying.  Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me.  I think he’s lying.

December 22

Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white sh*t fell today, and it’s so cold, it probably won’t melt till August.  Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss.  By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again.  I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he’s too busy.  I think the  *sshole is lying.

snow3

December 23

Only 2 inches of snow today.  And it warmed up to 0. Thought about decorating the front of the house today.  Am I nuts?!!  Why didn’t I do it a month ago??!

December 24

6 inches – Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.

Thought I was having a heart attack.  If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plow, I’ll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel.  I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I’ve just been!  Tonight the family wanted me to sing Christmas carols with them and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

December 25

Merry Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight –

Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God, I hate

the snow!  Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel.  The neighbor says I have a bad attitude. I think he’s a fricking idiot.  If I have to watch “It’s A Wonderful Life” one more time, I’m going to scream.

December 26

Still snowed in.  Why the hell did I ever move here?

December 27

Temperature dropped to – 30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

December 28

Warmed up to above -20.   Still snowed in.  The neighbor is driving me crazy!!!

December 29

10 more inches.  Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in.  That’s the silliest thing I ever heard.  How dumb does he think I am?

snow2

December 30

Roof caved in.  I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass.    Nine more inches predicted.

December 31

I set fire to what’s left of the house. No more shoveling.

January 8

Feel so good.  I just love those little white pills they keep giving me.

Why am I tied to the bed?
