Wednesday Whatever!

Wednesday

I was trying to think of something to write today and couldn’t. My mind was blank. Then I saw this blog post come up in my email box (this one)

I like the blog, I subscribed to this blog and I enjoy reading it whenever one of the authors put out a post. You should read it. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Ok, for those of you too lazy to go read it (ha!) Michael Helms, who by the way is a very good writer, asks, ‘when is an author an Author? Then he goes on to explain that he read an e-book that he felt was terrible. It was short, so it wasn’t even technically a novel, it was also badly (if at all) edited. So does this make the person who published it an author? He says, no. And I agree with him. It doesn’t make a person an author if all they publish is a bad short story. That’s not the reason I’m writing about it.

The reason I’m writing about it and pointing the post out is this……..

Am I an author? Or just a wannabe? Or maybe I’m ‘just a writer’.

You see, I’m not against what Michael says in his post. I’m more challenging some of the comments on the post. It’s the age-old debate…..does self-publishing make you an author or someone who just self-published? And if a writer puts out a book that isn’t professionally edited with a professional book cover does this automatically make it a bad book?

As most of you know my books were NOT professionally edited nor do they have professional book covers. Although I must admit I think the kind friend who did my book cover could be a professional at book covers. Anyway, the point being….does not having ‘professionals’ involved in the process make it a bad book? Automatically?

I think what got to me the most about Michael’s post was it hit a nerve with me. It hit my self-doubt button. That sucker is never far from the surface anyway.

Writer-

Am I an author? Or just a wannabe? Am I a fake because I self-publish?

In my comment to the post, I admitted that I did not have professionals involved in the process of publishing my books. Not because I didn’t want to. Because I’m a poor person. I just don’t have the money to hire professionals. Which brings me to another question. Are you a ‘professional’ just because you get paid to do something? I imagine you must have experience too. The couple of people who helped me edit my books are not paid to edit. But, one is a writer with many books under her belt and one was a teacher for most of his life. Does not THAT make them ‘professionals’?

Besides, I’ve seen traditionally published books with lots of editing mistakes. Does that discount their professionalism?

I’ve been having lots of problems getting my third book going. I have self-doubts as I mentioned. I am tired most of the time…….I could make dozens of excuses as to why I’m not writing. The bottom line is the doubt. Am I a writer? An author? Or a fake?

I know this feeling will pass. At least I hope it will. It’s not Michael’s fault that his article brought up these feelings. Nor the commentators on his post. It’s all mine. I own it.

Do I have to be traditionally published to be taken seriously as a writer? Some would answer that last question with a resounding yes. Why? Because that’s how it’s always been done? Times change folks. I’m old, but not too old to change with the times. Self-publishing is not a bad thing and yes it’s here to stay. Get used to it.

Now all I have to do is get myself in gear again and start writing, whether I’m an author or not. Because I refuse to let my fears or other’s opinions keep me from my dreams.

What’s your take on this debate?

Monday Meeting and an Announcment!

Monday Meeting

Good day, People! I hope your weekend was wonderful and you got some fun in.

Welcome to my new Monday Meeting posts. I had my first one last Monday, as I just can’t seem to get a post done on the weekend for the #coffeeshare thing. It’s easier for me this way, so here I am with my second one. I do hope you enjoy these meetings. Have one of your own if you like! Just let me know and link up! I would love to read yours.

Come on in, sit down, have your favorite drink and maybe a cupcake. I’ll forgo the cupcake myself, but I do enjoy seeing my guests enjoy themselves.

Let’s get this meeting started.

August is over with already. It just seems like it only started a few days ago. Time is moving by way too fast. In a couple of weeks, my birthday will be here. I’ll have a special post on that day as I will be reaching a milestone birthday! So mark your calendars for September 12th. It’s a Saturday and I’m sure you all are super busy on weekends, but I do hope you will stop in for a quick peek and to say hi! Join my birthday party! Likely the only one I will have. Sad, eh? 😉

Some of you have inquired on how the husband is doing lately. I really need to do a new post on that, but for now I will let you know here. He has his good days and his bad days. The new medicine for depression is taking a while kicking in. The doctor reassured us this is normal. He’s on Zoloft right now. This might change once he sees a therapist. He’s had one meeting with the mental health clinic a couple of weeks ago. He was supposed to hear from them for an appointment to see a regular therapist, but this hasn’t happened yet. So we wait. He’s been having a lot of problems going to sleep at night and then staying asleep even though he takes two sleeping pills. The new doctor put him on another pill and we’ll see if that works better.

The other day he didn’t get out of bed all day. Nothing would induce him to, so I let him be. It’s worrisome though, as the more he lays in bed, the worse the arthritis gets. I understand he hurts, but  he needs to understand that NOT moving makes it worse. But, I’m not going to nag him about it. I just keep doing what I can. That’s all I can do.

The other news I have is very exciting! I’ve been waiting months to say this…

I’m published on Amazon!

Yes, finally, The Canine Caper is finished, formatted and published on Amazon! Also, A Case of Deceit is ready for pre-order! The Canine Caper is a short story, so I’m not going to be doing a paperback version of it. A Case of Deceit, which is a full-length book, will also be available in paperback at the end of October. So, for the book A Case of Deceit, on October 30th it will be available in both e-reader and paperback form.

So many of you have followed my journey to publishing from the very beginning and I thank you for that. Now, my dream is realized. I’m so happy!

Here are the links for both books on Amazon for the US;

I am going to try to have a sale my birthday weekend on The Canine Caper. So if you want you can wait….but who wants to wait. 🙂

Sometime today I hope to have buttons on my sidebar that you can click that will take you to the Amazon book sites.

For now, I need to get back to my edits! Thank you for coming to the Monday Meeting and I’ll see you soon!

(If anyone wants to be kind enough to spread the word out about the books, I would be so grateful!)

Guest Post by Seumas Gallacher ~~ Why Author Seumas Gallacher has a blog….

profile

I ‘met’ Seumas in Blogville several months ago. He’s a delightful man with a great sense of humor.

He is also the author of several crime-thriller books that are hugely popular. Seumas is very helpful to other authors and want-to-be authors, if you have questions,  he’ll most likely have an answer.

Please, make welcome my new bloggy friend Seumas Gallacher.

why this ol’ Jurassic Scots Scribbler has a Blog…

…one of the perennial ‘chestnuts’ asked by newbie Authors, is whether or not they should maintain a Blog… in my not-so-’umble opinion I think it’s paramount for any writer in the modern publishing age to have his/her own Blog… producing yer literary masterpieces is one thing… but it’s only a part of yer ‘business of writing’… presence on the SOSYAL NETWURKS helps in the thrust to ‘build the platform’ of followers, and broadens readership…

in any business, good, strong, personal relationships are part and parcel of doing well in whatever field yeez may be in, and it’s no different in yer writing business… the novels and books are the place to have yer ‘Author’s Voice’ identified… the Blog is where yeez develop yer ‘Author’s Brand’… the personalised stuff which people like to connect with so well… my crime fiction is hard-boiled narrative… as an offset to that, the Blog is lighter-veined, hopefully entertaining, sum’times educational… and I focus on ‘sharing’ with fellow quill-scrapers…

support others and they’ll support back… it’s a fundamental desire most of us have… to belong… to be a member of the great, global, wunnerful writers’ diaspora… I also involve myself in Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pocket, Google+, Pinterest… and the beauty of it all?… each time I write a Blog Post, it automatically gets shared across all these channels… the reach is phenomenal…

this is not meant as a commercial ‘plug’, but what the heck, I published a while back on Amazon Kindle a wee guide to the few SOSYAL MEDYA links I use, SELF-PUBLISHING STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL SALES, which yeez can take a squint at on the sample page at Amazon… see if it might be of some help to yeez… and like my pal, Jackie here, I encourage Guest Posts galore on my page…come and join us… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!
