Weekly Writing Challenge: Mind the Gap

This week’s Mind the GapHow do you prefer to read, with an eReader like a Kindle or Nook, or with an old school paperback in hand?

Some of my best memories are tied together with books. I was taught to read at an early age. I could read before I went to kindergarten. I have had a strong and long love affair with words and books.

When real life would prove too much for me to handle at times, I buried myself in books. At my best I could read 5 or 6 books a week. When I was school age I got them from the library. I loved the library! The smell, the quiet, the rows upon rows of books. Ahhhh, my kind of heaven.

My local library had a limit on how many books you could take out. They upped the quota for me, because I was there every week and always read more then my quota. Plus, I think the librarian liked me. 😉

When I got older and had some money of my own I discovered book stores. Fresh, bright book covers beckoned me from every shelf. I became a regular shopper of books. The sales clerks at one particular store knew me by first name.

I have always had shelves full of books in any home I have had. You know the saying “A house is not a home without a pet, plant, etc”. Mine is ” A house is not a home without books!”.

Reading Nook 02

Now I also have an E reader  I got it for Christmas a few years back. It took me a while to warm up to it. But, warm up to it I did. I love to take it on trips, or when I have a doctor’s appointment. It fits in my purse and I can just whip it out and have a few minutes of enjoyable reading while I wait.

It’s very convenient on trips as it takes up a lot less room then a bunch of paperbacks. It weights a lot less too. That being said, it still won’t replace ‘real’ books in my heart. I love the feel of the paper pages, the smell of the paper and ink. I just love me some real live books.

I can appreciate the E reader though. As long as I can read, I just plain love books. Either way they are produced.

  1. Hi Jackie – I love books too, but maybe I love my Kindle just a snap more. In addition to the advantages you mention, I love to get a new book on a whim – whenever I want to read something! Also, now that we down sized from a big house to a condo, my built in book shelves are practically full already! Take care.

  2. I recently wrote about this so you know how I feel. I love love love hardcover books with dustjackets. I whined about my Nook Tablet weighing half a pound, but a hardcover book usually weighs at least a pound, and it doesn’t bother me a bit. I do love my tablet though and do use it for reading, but mostly for commenting on blogs – like now when I’ m waiting on my mother at the grocery store. 🙂 Is that chair really in your house? I want to sit there!

    1. I don’t have a tablet, I have a Sony ereader. I have only read books on it, not sure it does anything else. And I consider myself a geek, I may have to give up my geek license. I’m afraid the chair is not part of my house, just wishful thinking on my part. I usually just read in my office chair as it’s the most comfortable to me. Now if it was my chair, I would never get out of it. haha!

  3. Hi Jackie
I agree completely about a bookshelf making a house a home – I recently went to someone’s house and they showed me round, I got the feeling that something was inherently wrong with the place and it wasn’t until I got home that I realised there wasn’t a single book there. Not one. How could anyone live like that?
As for e-readers, well, I don’t hate them and I’m no technophobe, I’m just not interested – I don’t think I can read as well or as comfortably on them. Give me real books any day 🙂

    1. No books? that is not a home at all. I often wonder about people who don’t read books. How can you not read books?? I thought about the ereader the same way you did. Then I started reading with it. I still don’t use it as much as real books, but in some ways it’s much easier. If the weather is bad and I want something new to read, bingo! I go online and get one. In that way it is really nice. 🙂

  4. I haven’t tried an ereader yet, I do have the kindle on the pc, but looking at a screen and sitting in front of the computer longer than I need to isn’t enjoyable to me. Maybe one day, but I can’t see myself ever preferring an ereader to an actual book.

  5. I used to be a e-reader only kinda person. You can carry around so many books with you at a time! But I’m coming back to paper books now, I missed the feel of a physical book

    1. I think that is what most people miss with an ereader. The feel of a real book. Metal just doesn’t cut it. Thanks for reading Miss!
